Customising clothes - any tips or advice?

I saw a customised vest in a shop the other day which looked great, but had seriously inflated the price of it! So I thought I might have a go at customising my own clothes....

Does anyone have any tips or good websites I should look at for inspiration?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest you avoid the tassel and bead combination. The early nineties Cuban vacay look is best left alone.

Threadbangers.com is a great site with vidcast tutorials showing you how to do all sorts of creative things. They even show you how to make a bikini from an old t-shirt.

I would try http://www.streetshirts.co.uk for inspiration only.

It's quite expensive but you can try some ideas out on their really cool 'design your own' section!

Wow there are so many things you can do.

You can get fabric paints, sew in ribbons and trimmings, glue on crystals.

A really simple way to add a design is using the iron on transfer paper.

This website has loads of great computer papers: http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk

Youtube is a really great place to find tutorials. I found this one by the gorgeous Kat Von D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtEoqwS5urc

Ooh, good question. My top tip is for those who are either a bit lazy like me or who aren't great at sewing - Bondaweb!

My mum calls it invisible mending tape, I'm not sure what the generic name is, but basically you can do hems on things you shorten, save yourself a little time on mending jobs, but best of all, it's the laziest and most effective way to do applique. It works brilliantly on felt and cotton, so you can replicate all sorts of things you'd see in shops like Cath Kidston or Ollie & Nic...

Also, I recently bought a faboulous book called Stencil 101. That and a bit of fabric paint could create some fantastic t-shirts - it's got some great Banksy-style cutouts.

Thanks all for your tips! I have had an attempt at customising - will document (but don't look too closely at the stitching!)

lovebunny - noted - I'll leave out the Cuban tassels (but not the Caiprinhas)

RosannaT - Fabulous! I recently booked a holiday so I'm going to sort through my wardrobe for a suitable bikini t-shirt!

OszWorld - Great recommendation! That tool is lots of fun - I know I'm going to spend hours on this site!

kbell - that is a great tutorial - and the craftcomputerpaper site has info about making jewellery too!

LoveSoph - I think you've already seen my blanket stitch....yes Bondaweb is definitely the way forward for me!

    I'm inspired! Thanks!
