How can I be sure my Flight ticket will work on cheaper airlines?

Some people have bought cheap flights (less than £100 for each flight so consumer credit act won't help) and been told (after they arrive at airport all ready to travel!) that there was problem with payment so the tickets are not valid. Naturally they want to get on with holiday so they pay more for (possibly even the same?) flights and don't get money back. Is this still possible and how can we be sure to avoid it?
