What is the best Debit Card to use abroad, Other than NationWide?

I’m going overseas, backpacking for 8 months. We off to Cuba, South America and S.E.Asia. I know that Nation Wide have the best Debit Card to use because of the minimal fees, BUT they wont allow you to open a current account with the visa debit card without having their cash Card for at least 6 months. So its pointless, as you can only use it within the UK at certain ATMs, and I don’t have 6 months :) So are there any other decent Debit Cards one can suggest to use abroad which are great with exchange rates and other fees?
