US Dollar cheque

I recently found on a business trip to the US that United Airlines had overbooked a flight I was due to travel on. Once I finally got through the 3 1/2 hours worth of queues at the customer service desk at Washington they offered me $400 compensation which I took in the form of a cheque. Unfortunatly I now find that trying to bank the cheque in my UK sterling account with the Alliance & Leicester is proving to be problematic. They have said that the cheque can take upto 4 weeks to clear and that there are charges associated with it, however they are unable to confirm what these may be until the cheque is cleared. Does anyone have any advise on the easiest route to banking the cheque or cashing it?
