Sprucing up your garden doesn’t have to involve spending loads of cash, as Emma Roberts shares some budget gardening tips

With the sun finally out, British summer time is upon us, which means it’s time to pay our gardens a little TLC. I’m going to unearth some cash saving gardening tips that could help your money grow.

Equipment

The cheapest way to get gardening tools is to get them second hand. Many people are keen to get rid of big bulky items that they don’t use anymore and you could even get them free of freecycle.org. Make sure you check out car boot sales and charity shops too.

Gardening centres are often expensive but high street shops like Wilkinsons usually have really good deals on equipment.

Growing your own

Buying seeds is cheaper than buying plants, so why not grow from scratch? You can get bags of seeds cheaply from Wilkinsons and Lidl. You could also try growing your own vegetables. Tomatoes are easy to grow and when they’re ripe you can sell them to your neighbours.

While you’re at it, growing your own herbs is also a great idea and works out cheaper than buying them from the shop.

Plants

Growing flowers doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive. Sunflowers are easy to grow and you can get the seeds for a relatively low price.  Again, it’s cheaper to grow flowers from seeds rather than buying the plants from garden centres.

Garden furniture

Garden furniture can be really expensive but you could always try ebay to see if there are any good deals. Garden swap shop.co.uk is another great website because it offers a service where you can swap garden items, including furniture, with other members.
