With Father's Day just a week away, we have the best cheap gifts worth a look.

The best cheap Father's Day gifts

Father’s Day falls on 17th June this year, so the clock is ticking if you want to get your dad a present that he’ll love but which won’t cost you a fortune.

Here are some of the best gifts I’ve found, all for £20 or less.

Gifts under £5

For dads that spend a lot of time in the garden, this kneepad from gettingpersonal.co.uk is great. There’s a few different slogans to choose from, though my personal favourite is “Dad the weed slayer”. Best of all it’s only £4.99.

And check out this organic herb garden seed collection from notonthehighstreet.com. For £5 you get a collection of eight herbs. You can choose from two packs: pack one has basil, borage, chervil, coriander, dill, marjoram, parsley and salad burnet; pack two contains basil, caraway, chamomile, chives, fennel, lemon balm, savory and thyme.

Over at Marks & Spencer this Father’s Day keyring is £3.50.

If your dad is a practical type, then head over to play.com. For £3.99 you can get this 11-in-1 mini tool pocket knife.

For chocoholic dads, head over to Cadbury Gifts Direct. You can get all sorts of personalised chocolate bars for under a fiver.

If there’s one thing men always need, it’s a nice new wallet. This leather effect wallet from Argos is only £4.99.

Over at notonthehighstreet.com, for £4.50 you can get one of these personalised alphabet bottle openers.

Gifts under £10

There are plenty of Dad's Army themed presents on offer from Clintons this year, from this Don’t Panic mug for £6.99 to these Dad's Army cufflinks for £9.99.

Over at Marks & Spencer you can get some nice towelling slippers for £7.

You can help your old man get all patriotic with six pairs of black England socks from thingimajigs.co.uk. It will only set you back £7.99.

If you live within commutable distance of Oxfordshire, why not head off on a brewery tour and tasting for two. It’s just £9 from Virgin Experience Days.

Staying on a beer theme, Morrisons has a selection of classic ales gift box for £8.

Alternatively there’s paintballing for ten people for only a tenner from lastminute.com. It’s available at over 50 locations across the country and lunch is included.

The Moscow State Circus is touring the UK this summer, and tickets through lastminute.com start at just £8. Locations include Birmingham, Portsmouth, Hastings and Maidstone, so if your dad loves a trapeze artist or two, this could be hit!

If your dad loves the great outdoors then this cordless wet and dry electric razor may come in handy. It’s £8.45 from play.com

With summer here (supposedly) there’s plenty of time ahead for barbecues. And that means an excuse for dads to crack out their novelty aprons. There’s this Licence to Grill apron for £9.50 from Amazon, this Stand Back – Dad is Cooking! apron from Apron Heaven for £7.99 or even this Coronation Street themed effort from thingimijigs.co.uk.

Over at notonthehighstreet.com these seedbomb starter kits are £7.75.

Gifts under £20

What about this mini shaving kit gift set? It will set you back £20 from notonthehighstreet.com, and includes two different types of aftershave splash, beard oil and shaving oil.

If your dad is a football fan, why not arrange for him to take a tour of Wembley Stadium? There’s 25% off through Red Letter Days at the moment, so it will only set you back £13!

Here’s one for the beer aficionados. Head over to gettingpersonal.co.uk and you can pick up an engraved pint tankard for your old man. You can choose the message, so long as it’s under 30 characters. The tankard costs £16.99.

Keeping on the alcohol theme, there’s also this personalised wine from prezzybox.com. I can’t promise that the wine itself is any good, but you’ll most likely get a smile! It costs £14.95 and you can choose either red or white wine.

If your father is an adrenaline junkie then why not arrange for an extreme rigid inflatable boat taster. The 60-minute high speed cruise takes place down on the Solent, and currently costs just £19.50 from Virgin Experience Days.

He may not take this in the spirit in which it’s intended, but play.com is selling this Phillips nose/ear/eyebrow hair trimmer for £12.25.

If you really want to treat him with chocolate, then get over to Thorntons. There’s a Thanks Dad hamper with everything from I love Dad cups to chocolate medals and an original toffee box in there, all for £20.

But there’s a cheaper option, in the form of Alphabet Truffles for £14.99. Thortons will ice a message for you, so you can tell him you love him in your own way.

If retro sweets are more his thing, then over at MenKind.co.uk you can get a personalised large jar of retro sweets (parma violets, gob stoppers, cola bottles, popping candy and the rest) for £16.99.

For practical dads, get over to B&Q where you can nab this Stanley Toolbox for just £16.98.

I'm always amazed how people are encouraged to spend money at Christmas, birthdays, national celebrations like the Jubilee, Mother's Day, Father's Day and still have money left over for Wimbledon, the Olympics and Henley...

    Is that Hooray Henley?

I think John is looking to the future when stinky nappies are a distant memory and wondering what gifts he would like. As a responsible parent, maybe better to raise your children not to get suckered in by commercialism and buy genuine gifts with genuine sentiment at random times of the year and not dictated by external influence.

Actually electricblue I think Father's Day is a complete sham and would be aghast if I thought my little boy was spending his pocket money on a present for me.

But there are plenty of people who think the opposite and view the day as a way to show some gratitude to their fathers. And who am I to tell them they are wrong to do so?

There's still a few slots in the calendar. Coming soon from the fertile brains of Yank marketeers: Divorced Civil Partner's Day, Third Cousin Once Removed Day, and for the pets, Bitch Your Dog Mated With Behind Your Back Day.

Expensive presents and parties for all, or you're a mean-spirited skinflint animal hater, OK?

Good for you, John! There's hope for the next generation of Lovemoney journalists yet. I'm not sure that the 'showing gratitude to their fathers' bit is the crux of Fathers' Day, we should surely show gratitude to our parents without some contrived day as the nudge?

As far as articles on presents in general I'm all for it, especially when gifts are practical and show some thought. Random gifts were a way of life in my family and I continue the tradition, accumulating items I know will be appreciated by friends and family as I find them. I have a personal hatred of imported crap bearing the Union Jack at the moment, it seems weird that we can 'protect' pasties and pork pies but we can't prevent deceptive use of the flag.
