Club together to save money online

If you want to save some money, team up with a few other people and watch the savings stack up!

Club together to save money online

All of us like to save money where we can. And the good news is, there are now numerous ways you can get together with a group of strangers to save some serious cash, using only the internet. Here, I’m going to highlight some of the top new websites that enable you to do just that!

Car sharing

If your car is rarely full and you live near colleagues or friends who travel the same way as you, why not consider car sharing? That way you’ll be able to split the cost of petrol and save money.

If you don’t know anyone who is travelling the same way as you, websites such as CarShare and liftshare.com help you to find people travelling in your direction, so you can easily share your journeys. And CarShare reckons that sharing a daily commute could save members more than £1,000 a year!

Group buying

More and more group buying websites are springing up offering daily deals in cities up and down the country. However, these deals are only valid providing enough people sign up to them. Good websites to check out include Groupola, Groupon and livingsocial.

If you’re interested in the deal, simply sign up and then invite your friends to ensure enough people sign up! Once enough people have signed up, the deal will close and you’ll pay for the deal. After that you’ll receive your discount voucher and off you go!

At the time of writing this article, Groupola was offering teeth whitening treatment worth £700 for £100 at a clinic in Edinburgh, Livingsocial was offering a steak and champagne dinner for two for £21 in Manchester's Northern Quarter, and Groupon was offering 66% off a haircut with full head highlights at a top London salon.

You can either check these websites every day, or sign up and you’ll be sent a daily email telling you which deals are on offer in the city nearest to you.

Nanny sharing

If you have kids and you’re a working parent, finding someone to look after the kids can be extremely expensive. Unfortunately, we can’t all hire Mary Poppins.

So if you need to cut the costs, why not nanny share? Take a look at websites such as nannyshare.co.uk and thenannysharers.co.uk which allow you to share a nanny with another family.

Ed Bowsher gives some tips on how to make sure a new baby doesn’t destroy your finances

Through these websites you’ll be able to search for families in your area that are also looking for childcare and you’ll then be able to split the cost of the nanny. Easy!

Bear in mind, before employing a nanny or childcarer, you should check the identification, qualifications, references and criminal record bureau checks of the nanny or childcarer.

Share with your neighbours

Streetbank is a nifty new website that allows you to share and borrow various items from your neighbours and vice versa.

So let’s say you need a bicycle for an afternoon but you don’t want to buy one. So you register for free on Streetbank, enter your postcode and find that someone within one mile of where you live has one that you can borrow.

Once you’ve registered on Streetbank you will need to offer an item or a skill which you’re willing to lend out too. This could be anything from a book to a ladder to French lessons or baking cakes. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to see all items on offer near you.

Not only will this save you money, but it should also help you to get to know your neighbours!

Freebies

Similarly, there are several community freebie websites that allow you to get stuff absolutely free. So if you need a new bed, wardrobe, lawnmower or guitar, there might be someone offering one for free on websites such as Snaffle Up, Freegle and Feel The Generosity.

Similar to the original Freecycle network, all of these websites allow you to advertise items that you no no longer want and also allow you to get whatever is advertised for free! You can even post ‘wanted’ notices asking for specific items.

You don't have to give something away to get something for free, but we suggest that at some point you do try to give away something yourself to help keep these fantastic websites going!

John Fitzsimons highlights the best sites to visit if you fancy a freebie!

Swap your stuff

There are also plenty of swapping websites that allow you to swap anything from books to clothes to your home!

For example, SwapStyle and BigWardrobe allow you to swap clothes and accessories with others, Bookmooch allows you to swap books, Intervac and Home for Exchange let you swap your home with someone else’s for a holiday, and SwapShop lets you swap pretty much anything else!

You can find out more in Stop spending, start swapping.

Alternatively, you could just host your own swapping party, grab some wine and nibbles and invite your friends over – ensuring they bring with them any unwanted clothes and books that you might be able to swap!

2 for 1

Finally, if you live in London or you’re planning to pay the big smoke a visit, check out showpairs.co.uk which offers great discounts on West End theatre tickets providing there’s two of you! Not only that, but you may also be able to pick up a brilliant deal on a meal to complete your experience.

And don’t forget that you can also save lots on meals out with 2 for 1 restaurant vouchers. Check out our Frugal Food blog which highlights the latest offers every Friday!

Even people who are deep in debt, will sometimes say " 0h I can't be bothered".

These are really interesting site suggestions that I have never heard of, will def be giving them a go :-)

I guess the obvious internet savers are the comparison websites - I always use them to save on car insurance, bills etc. It's also worth getting a best quote then going direct to the companies to see if they'll beat it.

I have mentioned this one before, but it is the best way I have found to save money on the internet by far! It is Free (we all like free!) to use and is designed to find the best prices and deals instantly (use the compare button):

    www.myshoppinggenie.com/geniesavesmoney

It has saved me a lot of money (£300 off my new tv and £45 off ipod nano) so I won't shop without it now. Plus, it is instant so it saves time as well.

I like new ways to save my hard earned money. These are nice informations to do that. My friend told me a few weeks ago to visit BarterQuest.com. As I visited the page at the first time I was surprised what kind of thinks I was able to trade. It is very easy to save money with bartering. It is not only possible to trade goods it is also possible to trade services or real estate.

Hi ajtaylor22, I can assure you and anyone else my shopping genie is neither a scam or a pyramid scheme!

It is the best online shopping app by far - I have compared it with Quidco and the shopping function provided by Utility Warehouse and each search I have done the savings through Genie have far outweighed the best price the others can find, including their cash back - try if for youself and see how they compare:

    www.myshoppinggenie.com/geniesavesmoney

Plus the App is absolutely free, so there can't be any scam. If you, or anyone else, would like to know more I'd be happy to discuss it with you.

Mike10613 - I'm with you on that, don't think car sharing is one I will try! hehee

Hi Rachel, correct it is not a scam and yes it is a business.

The business model is the same as Avon, Kleenese, Utility Warehouse, Anne Summers, The Body Shop... etc. We all need jobs or businesses to pay our way in this world. You will see other people have posts in this article such as Shiblee above (apologies if I am mistaken, but I percieve their comment is regarding a business such as Utility Warehouse) and there are many other lovemoney users who have posted on other articles that refer to their businesses, such as Utility Warehouse.

The article is about saving money on the internet, this app does precisely that – in fact it not only saves the users money shopping online, but time as well and is completely free for them to use. Someone, somewhere will always be making money whether its you doing your shopping, using comparison sites to get the cheapest insurance deal or clicking on google ads and so on, its how the world works. There is no difference for the end user between using this app to using other comparison sites in that they are free to use and usually (Genie is for definite - I can't speak on behalf of other sites) designed to save the user money - but they will be making someone else money as they are all someone's business. Importantly, however, with Genie the money does not come from the user but the businesses themselves pay for it.

It's the same as getting advice on credit cards, bank accounts, recommending sites like ebay and amazon, its free advice, free to use the user will benefit but it will make someone money.

Kiyosaki (author of Poor Dad, Rich Dad and The Business of the 21st Century - very good book!) strongly recommends these types of businesses to gain financial freedom. Considering we are all on these sites for the same reason, to help each other save or make money, why not give it a go you'll be impressed with how well it works and how much you can save.

Good Post!  You are definately preaching to the converted with me on this.

I love the 'Rich Dad' series and have improved my life on all levels with his teachings which have lead me to other inspirational speakers.

I am passionate about creating passive residual income to become financially free and enjoy 'The Juice out of life!'- Tony Robins.  I started my own mission and goals to do this in October 2009 and i am already a quarter way to this freedom.

Not a lot of people understand this concept yet and it is hard to explain. The great late Jim Rohn had a quote - 'Formal education will earn you a living. Self education will earn you a fortune'

Apart from Genie do you have any other opportunities your involved in? I would like to hear from you. You can contact me through this website

Axel ( Gavein ), SaveMoneyMake Money, Shiblee etc just wondering if you have to pay lovemoney.com for everytime you advertise on your posts. If not i will certainly consider this form of free advertising for my own business in the future. I think lovemoney should bar these self advertising posts. I like the way you are getting yourselves to email each other. Email addresses should not be published in these type of posts and are only put on display for business purposes. I find these type of ads a bit underhand and believe lovemoney should take action when they appear on this excellent website. They distract from genuine posts from people who just want to comment.

I get it now. A pyramid selling system. When you click on the above links in the advertising posts from Axel ( Gavin ), SaveMoney, Shiblee, sisroe then they get commission as Rachel Perry has pointed out. Made the mistake of downloading the genie site this afternoon and had a job getting the bugger uninstalled tonight. Surely lovemoney can do something to put a stop to this annoying underhand advertising. I'm all for businesses doing well but go and pay for and put your ads in the proper place. I will never again connect to any site advertised like this.

    Hi Axel (Gavin)

I am a big fan of Tony Robbins too! He is very inspirational, I have his cd's, books and have been to his conference- and even did the Fire Walk :-)

I have a few businesses, property is my 'I' in line with Kiyosaki, but Genie is the only mlm. I will send you an email, nice to see someone else who is open minded and can see the bigger picture.

Mymoneymatters- I agree, I do not publish my email address on sites and as such using websites is a safe way of passing on this info.

This is an open forum for adults to discuss ways to save and make money. People are entitled to be informed, and they make their own decision on whether to read the article, comments or take on any advice.

I have made other comments about saving money on credit reports and bank accounts, using car boot sales and grocery shopping online so as not to buy more than you wanted. These are not my businesses but good advice, similar to that given in this article and many others. Yet, this advice will make someone else money. Perhaps none of us should ever give any advice on anything then? and we can all live in a miserable world where no-one helps each other. However, Such information, support and advice is what this site is about, helping save or make money.

That is why I am involved in Genie, and 100% love what I do and recommend it to others. I get to help people save money on products they were going to buy anyway, and I do so by giving an App to them for free.

There are comments on articles that I don't particularly care to read - perhaps they may not be of relevance to me or not of the same opinion as me, but I can make the decision to read them or not, act upon the advice or not.

Furthermore, please do no make ill-informed comments - I will affirm again as I did above, Genie is most certainly not a pyramid scheme. Pyramid schemes are illegal!

It is an mlm business, with an amazing product that is designed to help the user save money, time and it is completely free for them to do so.

The link does not automatically install the App -it takes the user to a website where it is very clear it is a business - exactly the same as other price comparison sites.

Infact, 2 people come onto the screen and start talking to the user to explain how the Genie works to save them money shopping and price comparing online, and how this is a great business opportunity. As such it is made very clear prior to the install that this is a business.

As for installing and un-installing this is very simple to do, though I am perplexed as to why if you want to save money you would remove what many people consider to be the best tool there is for doing so. I notice you mention you have businesses. I'd be interested in hearing what these are, as businesses are usually providing a useful service and I'd like to know if yours can help me save or make money?

SaveMoneyMakeMoney are you and Axel the one person congratulating each other on the businesses you are promoting? I wonder who it was that recommend your earlier post. And what's with the constant praise of a certain book. I feel like these comments from you are like listening to Jehovahs Witnesses at the door. You say people make their own mind up as to whether to read a comment but by then it's already too late. How do we know it's a scam until we have read the post? You complain about my comments that maybe none of us should give advice on anything then and we can all live in a miserable world. Well, actually you might care to notice that when other users put helpful information and links on their posts it is in the main to help other users and their primary concern is not to make money for themselves like you are doing promoting a site you admit to be involved in. What's to stop every other businessman in the UK doing the same as you if that's regarded as the norm? Looking back over the above posts i find that the contributions from you and the other advertisers ( or were you just communicating with yourself? ) has spoiled the enjoyment of reading genuine comments. You come across as false and i reckon you have been reading too many get rich books, in particular from the other side of the pond. I wouldn't want to use any product advertised in this way and even believe it could deter genuine advertisers who actually pay up for the service to reconsider using lovemoney if this isn't sorted out. As i would say to the Pakistanis, 'it just ain't cricket, old chap'.

I have no idea who Axel is, and if you have a look you will see he is involved in a very different business - we are in no way connected. Nor am I connected to anyone else posting on this article, or connected to Tony Robins, Kiyosaki or any other motivational people who have been helpfully commented upon here.

All my posts have been genuine and useful, if you do not want to save time and money for free that is entirely your perogative. However, making personal attacks and incorrect statements is neither helpful or appropriate to this site. You have expressed you opinion and I have expressed mine, it is probably time to move on as some of your comments are very offensive.

@ mymoneymatters, in name but not in nature!

I have met a few people like yourself that are unwilling to look at something to see if it actually is beneficial. Did you know Pyramid schemes are illegal in this country? have you researched this?

The business im involved in, and i wont mention it as to not upset you again, has been established for 13 years as a multi level marketing company. If you mistaken this to a pyramid then you come accross to me as ignorant.

The company is also listed on the FTSE 250, awarded company of the year 2009 in the Financial Times, numerous awards in the Which? magazine.

Our cashback partners include M&S, B&Q, Sainsburys, River Island and many more. Do you think any of these established companies would involve themselves into a 'Pyramid Scam'

I show people how to cut down on their household bills every month and if they are interested how to earn some extra money. Do you not think that is ethical?

I refer to books that have inspired me to do something with my life to pass on the positivity and hopefully give other people an insight. And no i do not have a book selling business.

Society has thrived and flourished over hundreds of years by sharing ideas, opportunities and networking. Im sure there is a nice place for you in communist China if you want your internet controlled.

Well good for you but i beat you to it by three quarters. The financial freedom not the book that is. " The Juice of Life". Did you pay for that? So maybe you could learn from me. How much do these get rich books go for these days. Certainly an idea for the future. Maybe i will put a mansion on the front cover with a middle aged dude standing next to his Ferrari and a hot babe clinging on his arms. Middle aged dude will have a big smile on his face and God love us who can blame him? Nice shiny cover with a hefty price tag. The gullible morons who buy the book probably won't get rich but they sure as hell will help me to. You also say regarding getting the juice out of life that " not a lot of people understand this concept yet and it is hard to explain'. Axel, i never said or suggested i was amazing in everything i do. Only that i achieved financial freedom before you did and i personally don't think that in itself is so amazing. Judging by your posts you are fascinated by other peoples get rich schemes whether they be written in books or on youtube. The individual you mention has made a fortune from writing books and doing seminars and tv series and good for him. There are people out there that feel they need this type of help from motivational speakers and that is their choice. I would never go to a seminar and read this type of book. I'm not the impressionable type. This is my life and that's my choice. Two days back you quoted from 'The Juice out of life' - Tony Robins. I think it's a fair asumption to make that i am not the only person who would have assumed that this is a book. So maybe it's you who should have made this clearer in the first place. That free information on youtube is a great free advertising tool for an individuals work. Eventually the hope is that those watching motivational speakers for free on these clips end up going to a seminar and paying top whack for the service. Or maybe the speakers are just doing it out of the goodness of their hearts bless them. The reference to the mansion and hot babe were my thoughts for a front cover if i were to write a get rich book. I am the honest type so i might call it " Hey Idiot! Buy My Book and Make ME Rich ". What do you reckon? Can you see yourself falling for that one? Because you are the type of reader i would be targeting. You refer to my secret business. My business isn't secret. Just wouldn't want to share it with you. You don't need me to inspire you. You have 'free' clips on youtube to fill that function.

Well if creating more money for myself and family with residual passive income makes me an idiot! then let me have the village!

To grow and expand you need to have resistance. Like a muscle builder lifting weights putting resistance against the muscles to make them grow stronger and bigger.

I want to thank you for your honest opinions about me and my way of life. You are my resistance. Without people like you i cannot grow stronger and better in life.

Negativity can wear people down. However i find it adds petrol to my burning desire, the fire inside me to succeed in everything i do. So again,

    Thank you so much!

I find 3 out of 10 people i talk to each week are interested in improving their lives. So 7 are not interested for whatever reason. I dont mind, thats a great statistic for me. Again you have helped my consistancy. I dont mind that you have been one of the seven this week. Because i know i have 3 who do.

Axel, i am all for individuals trying to better themselves and earn an honest wage. The problem i have had with you from the start is how you go about it and how it is effecting me. You put comments on this site which had links to a company you are keen to promote. When i read comments on here i expect them to be impartial. I put links on my posts that others might find helpful and that is my sole intention for putting them there. If i want to advertise my company i will do so in an appropriate manner and most certainly have to pay for the privilage. Looking back over the posts above when one reads from the likes of sisroe, MakeMoneySaveMoney, CheekyCharlie and you one notices a common theme of self promotion and a false attitude. It's when you start writing to each other complimenting each others products. Come on now, what do you take us for? These posts effect me because if the majority of contributers are like you and the others i mentioned then i and others will just stop reading them and eventually stop contributing our own posts. We won't know who is genuine any more. You say 3 out of 10 people you speak to each week are keen on improving their lives and 7 out of 10 are not interested for whatever reason. What a load of crap. Where do you meet these people? I never ask anybody if they want to improve their lives. What the hell has it got to do with you? Maybe you go up to them on the street. Of course most people want to improve their lives. If some dodgy guy in a suit came up to me on the street and asked if i wanted to improve my life the first thing i would say to get the weirdo out of my face is NO. Just because they say this to you doesn't mean they mean it. Strangers in general don't want to discuss their future lives with some dude they have just met on the street or anywhere else for that matter. You love your inspiriational you tube clips and reciting quotes from motivational speakers who have got rich from the likes of you in the first place. I am not interested in being educated by born again Christians, Mormons or morons or the likes of you. You strike me as someone who is false in his writings and whose sole desire in life is to become very rich. I may be wrong but i may be right. Just don't try it at my expense. All i want on lovemoney is to read impartial posts from genuine contributers. Now, is that too much to ask?

    Mymoneymatters,

I used to have a Kleeneze business, so I know the Multi Level Marketing industry well, but thanks to fatherhood taking up what was previously free time to operate my business, I gave it up, so I hope you can see I have nothing to gain financially in making this posting.

MLM businesses are reguated by the Direct Selling Association and are by law required to give substantial guarantees and often money-back terms. People to operate MLM businesses generally do benefit from encouraging other people to start their own businesses but the financial gain they make from doing this does not come from the people they have introduced but rather from the parent company, which has thus gained a further opporunity to sell more of its products and gives them a small proportion of the additional profits thus made as an incentive to find further people who are willing to distribute the company's product. Each of these people is also able to be rewarded by the parent company if they introduce further distributors for the companies product. Some people build hugely successfull businesses this way, many people make a small to medium profit in terms of sales commission from the products they sell themselves, along with any money paid by the company as a bonus for effectively opening up further retail opportunities, and many people flirt with it for a while and then drop out having not really develloped the opportunity they first set out to gain. The sales model is a legitimate and effective model and has been around for a very long time now, so has stood the test of time

As a style of business it is not for everyone. People with MLM businesses need to be outgoing people who are not afraid to meet and talk to total strangers and they need to be people with sufficient self belief to be able to to build an additional stream of income when they are probably also dealing with the normal matters of the day job and family as well.

You may have seen cars with signs painted onto them offering to help you make some extra money, or seen people standing at railway stations in the mornings handing cards to passing commuters printed with contact information on a business opportunity. You may have seen notices taped to road signs or stickers featuring the same sort of information stuck onto or close to cash machines. You may have seen similar information in the small classified adverts in the paper. These are all ways network marketers find people who are potentially interested in their businesses. Every one of them knows that of a hundred cards given out, ninety will go straight into rubbish bins and perhaps ten will be kept by people who feel in that moment that they could possibly do with a way to make some more money. Of them perhaps five will actually contact the person whose details are on the card and of them maybe three will look at the business opportunity. Of these three, one or two of them are likely to actually take up the opportunity. Of every ten who actually take up the opportunity, two to three are likely to drop out again very quickly, six or seven will be likely to create a small additional income for themselves and perhaps one will actually build a business profitable enough to replace their income from the day job. The people handling out the cards etc know this and are generally comfortable with those numbers. The business does not suit everybody and in any case, as in any retail model, you still need more people who can potentially be customers than you have trying to build businesses from selling the products.

For the right person though, network marketing/multi level marketing can be an opportunity to make a good second income.

As I said, I have nothing to gain from this so I hope it can be taken as a fairly unbiased description of the busines models which some have been commenting on here.

Crispvs, thanks for the informative post. I do see these guys handing out cards and see these advertising posters on poles offering unreal earning opportunites with the emphasis on unreal. The big bosses will be the ones to make the fortunes but the majority of often desperate workers will make bugger all. They are a nuisance and i don't like the littering side of this either. It seems a bit like a pyramid scheme to me but to be honest i don't really care what it is or what they do i am just annoyed when they come and plug their businesses on here. I reckon the posts they write are very false and upbeat and it's a bit like a cross between talking to a Jehovahs Witness at the door and reading a get rich book from the U.S.A. I want to read impartial posts from contributers who are merely writing their thoughts on a matter and not trying to earn money for their business. But maybe others enjoy reading these self advertising posts. I don't know. I can only speak for myself and i for one don't like them.

@mymoneymatters, You picture me as a con artist and false. I am very honest and sincere in my posts and i genuinely want to help people with saving or making money. I have found a vehicle to do this and want to share this with other like minded people. If you help people with what they want, you attract what you want. Why should this affect you???

Do you not think people can make there own mind up or decision? Thats insulting. We live in a free country with real opportunities to be had. Many people are glad of stumbling accross possibilities on sites like this and go on to be a success. I can offer plenty of real life stories on people this has happened to. Who all made their own decision. There is plenty of people who it wasnt for and again they made their own decision.

So again, this affects you because???

You mention that there are a group of us all complimenting each other. I have replied to one post from someone who recommends 'Genie'. This is a person i do not know and just wanted to chat with them privately about the product. I can look at it and make this decision without getting upset about it. Its my choice.

You refer to me as some dodgy guy in a suit approaching people on the street! Just shows your ignorance again. I do not hang around tube or train stations or stand in a street handing out cards. I have normal conversations with people i meet naturally and they at least listen. Its good advice to listen.

Who has mentioned religion??? Why do you bring this into the discussion?

You seem to know all about everything, so please tell me what experience have you had? you presume a lot of things. And you keep refering to a Pyramid. I to do not recommend Pyramid schemes as they are illegal.

I have offered an explanation to all your gripes and you continue introducing new arguments and paint an ugly picture of me who you dont know. You have never mentioned anything negative about the actual service. So why dont you take a look and lets get back to the original post about saving money

Axel, you write ' Do you not think people can make their own mind up and decision' yet in the previous post from me ( roll your eyeballs 5 cms up the page ) i end with " But maybe others enjoy reading these self advertising posts. I don't know. But i can only speak for myself and i for one don't like them ". So whose mind am i trying to make up? For you to suggest i am telling other posters what to and what not to read is insulting. I never mentioned the term con artist. Is it yourself that thinks this is a relevant term? You say you are very honest and sincere in your posts. That is for others to decide not the contributer. Who is going to say otherwise about their own posts? As i have said before these posts effect me because i don't like the false message they have and this constant self advertising that is gladly virtually non existant from every other regualar poster. You say why don't i take a look. Remember, last week when i wrote i did and i then deleted it. I like reading the many intelligent impartial posts contributers send in. And long may they continue. Bye bye Axel. Address your posts to someone else. Maybe you will actually convince them of something. It ain't going to happen with me. Not now, not ever.

Regarding an earlier post and a free ad link i came across this review   http://www.businessforhome.org/2010/09/my-shopping-genie-review-not-so-good/    of myshoppinggenie by Troy Dooly and below his video clip are two more from an investigative news report shown on RTE television. But have a look and make your own mind up. No harm looking at both sides of the argument.
