Have a cheap day out in London

If you live in London, or you’re planning a trip to the capital, check out these top bargains...

The capital has a reputation for being ridiculously overpriced, and this assumption is, on the whole, justified - especially for tourists.

For example, entrance for two adults to one of the premier tourist attractions, the Tower of London, costs a whopping £36. It's much the same story at other top attractions around the city, which typically cost around £10 to £15 per person.

What a rip-off!

The good news is, with a little careful planning, you can go out in London very cheaply indeed - and if you're really clever, even avoid spending anything at all!

Top London offers

By using websites such as daysoutguide.co.uk and lastminute.com, you can bag hundreds of discount and 2-for-1 offers (note that with daysoutguide.co.uk, you need to have a valid train ticket for the day of your trip).

So here are my pick of the top London offers available at the moment and where you can get them from:

What's more, depending on what day of the week you're visiting London, you can get a wide variety of deals and 2-for-1 offers in some of the biggest restaurants in the capital.

For instance, visit an Ask restaurant between Sunday and Thursday and you can get a main course for £1 when buying another - simply register here to take advantage. To check out more offers, read our weekly Frugal Food  article, where you'll find all the latest food deals.

Stuff you can do for free

It's amazing how much free stuff there is to do in London, if you open your eyes. Many museums and galleries across the capital are free of charge. The big names of course are Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Imperial War Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.

However, it's also worth checking for smaller venues such as the Horniman Museum, which contains a variety of exhibitions from around the world, or Kenwood House which not only is an interesting building but also houses paintings by big names such as Rembrandt, Turner and Gainsborough.

If you have a specialist interest in something, you're a regular visitor to London or just want to avoid the crowds, there are also several great museums aimed at catering to such audiences. Places such as the Museum of Garden History, the National Army Museum, the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and even the Library and Museum of Freemasonry are just some examples.

Be warned however, that some of these museums will charge for entry to exhibitions within the building. For example, the 1960s photography show at the National Portrait Gallery costs £11 per adult (although you can get 2 for 1 vouchers using your train tickets).

You can also witness British traditions for free too. Watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, visit the Houses of Parliament, or sit in on a trial at the Old Bailey. Certain times and days are better than others, so you should check before you head to any of these first.

There's plenty of other ways to be entertained for free in London too. By using the VisitLondon website you'll be able to search out free music, comedy and even cinema venues.

And don't forget to bring your own packed lunch with you to avoid paying for expensive food in museum restaurants and shops!

Finally....

If you are going to be in London on 5 December and you have an American Express card, such as the American Express Platinum Cashback Card, you can benefit from double points every time you spend on it! To qualify, you'll need to brave the crowds and shop in London's Regent Street and Oxford Street which will be traffic free from midday. The deal includes airmiles, Harrods reward points, Nectar points and cashback, but corporate cards won't be included in the scheme.

You didn't mention the British Museum, which to me is the biggest of the lot.

There are many free or cheap things to do in London. The following I wrote on another website a few years ago. Some of it is out of date, but most of it still holds true:

Free live comedy (either in comedy clubs or seeing TV/radio being recorded in London's many studios and theatres)

    free live music

great walks - which are free obviously (my favourite is Southbank from The Eye to Tower Bridge)

    free carnivals

    free festivals

    free outdoor cinema and theatre

    free clubs.

And where all the above isn't free, it can also be really cheap.

Learn how to read Time Out magazine PROPERLY! It's The Londoner's Bible.

You also get free entertainment just watching the bizarre and diverse people that walk past on Oxford Street or in Covent Garden, or the beautiful and fashionable people on Carnaby Street.

And don't forget London's parks. There's so much cheap/free stuff to do in this city that I threw away my television. That saves me £140-£400 a year too!

Links to find free things to do in London:

    MUSIC GIGS

    Virgin Megastores

    http://www.virginmegastores.co.uk/eventslist.jsf

Free gigs in store by bands promoting their new albums.

    HMV Stores

    http://www2.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/navigate.do?pPageID=1080

Free gigs in store by bands promoting their new albums.

    Rough Trade

    http://www.roughtrade.com/site/instore.lasso

Free gigs in store. The artists tend to be more arty and less commercial.

    KOKO Camden

    http://www.koko.uk.com/

Sign up to Koko's mailing list. Sometimes there are free gigs, e.g. for recording the Album Chart Show. Tip: if tickets are sold out, try to find out who is supplying them. Sometimes it's SRO Audiences for example. If you go direct, they often have more tickets available.

Turn up early to the Album Chart Show, because tickets are first-come, first-served. Doors normally open at 5.45. make sure you're there by 5.30 if you want a good spot on the balcony or at the front of the mosh pit!

KOKO also hosts 'Club NME', which is a good night for indie fans. It's not free, but it's cheap. (The booze isn't cheap though.) It has a DJ in one room and a couple of live bands in another.

Also, there's people-watching in the area. Go on a Monday to Mornington Crs, the closest tube station, when an Album Chart Show is being recorded. Watch everyone walk or run out of the station towards KOKO. It's surprisingly entertaining what you see and hear!

    TV/RADIO RECORDINGS

Always turn up early for all TV and radio recordings, because tickets are first-come, first-served. They allocate more tickets than there are seats, because there are always no-shows. But they must fill the whole theatre, or the sound won't be right. For more popular shows, turn up especially early!

TV comedy recordings nearly always come with the added bonus of a warm-up act. Sometimes they're a bit raw, but other times you get to spot up-and-coming talent before they get on TV themselves.

    The Applause Store

    http://www.applausestore.com

See TV being recorded for free: The Friday Night Project, Big Brother (pah!), Top Gear, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and QI, plus many more shows. I've seen QI live a few times. It's great. Like all TV recordings you get to see a lot more than is shown on TV. All the rudest and most libellous jokes are cut out for TV.

    Hattrick Productions

    http://www.hattrick.co.uk/

Hattrick is a production company that provides tickets to its own shows. These include Armstrong & Miller, Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Have I Got News For You?

If you want to see an improv show even better than Whose Line Is It Anyway, go to the Comedy Store in Leicester Square on a Wednesday or Sunday. It's the funniest, most reliable comedy I've ever seen. These comics are so quick!

As for Have I Got News For You? I've seen this being recorded 14 times. It's awesome. Recording usually lasts one-and-a-half hours, although it was more like two-and-a-half with Neil Kinnock, because he made the mistake of picking on Paul and Ian, so they ripped him to shreds. You don't see any of that when watching the programme! Turn up especially early for this show. 6pm should hopefully get you there on time and, if you're lucky, a good seat.

    SRO Audiences

    http://www.sroaudiences.com/

See such shows as Mock The Week and Bremner, Bird And Fortune. I've seen the former being recorded. It was good.

    BBC TV and radio

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/whatson/tickets/

You can see Strictly Come Dancing, but, on the plus side, you can see Later...With Jools Holland. There are lots of comedy shows on all the time, too. Keep an eye on this page.

DO NOT OVERLOOK RADIO! There are some funny BBC radio programmes, my favourite being Just A Minute, but Banter is also good live.

    OTHER

    The Scoop

    http://www.morelondon.co.uk/events.asp

The Scoop is an outdoor amphitheatre which hosts free cinema, theatre and events. Check it out, especially in summer.
