Punish BT for increasing its landline charges!

Emma Roberts
by Lovemoney Staff Emma Roberts on 23 August 2010  |  Comments 38 comments

Emma Roberts reveals why now is a good time to switch landline providers and uncovers some tips on saving money on your landline bills.

Punish BT for increasing its landline charges!

It seems that BT never fail to annoy masses of their loyal customers.

This time, from the 1st of October, they’re planning to increase their line rental fees by 50p as well as boosting up their call charges. On average, charges are going up by 10%, with many customers now paying £45 a year more than others - just for landline rental!?

And of course, as soon as BT announces changes, other landline providers (such as Talk Talk and Sky) hike up their charges as well.

There are ways to avoid the hikes, as this article explains, but many of them are quite finnicky and come with catches in the small print (such as needing to make a certain number of BT calls a month). Why should BT's customers be punished for their loyalty in this way?

For this reason, here at lovemoney.com, we're calling on readers to fight back and punish BT en masse by simply switching to a new landline provider.

And the good news is, the helpful folks at Ofcom have just provided a lifeline for stranded landline owners looking to switch their providers or give up on landlines altogether.

After 18months of discussions with the top three landline providers; BT, TalkTalk and Virgin, Ofcom have announced that landline termination charges will soon be reduced by up to 85%.

For example, if you wish to ditch BT, then you’ll have to pay £2.00 a month for the remaining time of your contract rather than £11.54. Take a look at the table below for some more information on the most basic packages from the top three landline providers.

Provider and Package

Old early termination charge

New early termination charge

Date new charge is introduced

BT weekend

£11.54

£2.00

October 2010

TalkTalk evening and weekend

£14.44

£3.00

June 2010

Virgin Media (cable) phone

£11.99

£4.00

August 2010

So, the reduction of the early termination charge means this is great news if you’re fed up with BT or any other landline provider. But before you hang up on them, make sure you know how to get the best deal on your landline.

Should you switch?

Before cancelling your current landline contract, consider all the costs involved.

Now that the top three landline providers are lowering their termination fees, other companies are likely to follow because if they don’t they could face formal enforcement action from Ofcom.

Recent question on this topic

This means that your early termination payments should be relatively low if you have a basic contract with your provider.

If you have a bundle deal with your current provider that includes broadband or television, you could be looking at higher termination costs, so check this out before you cancel your contract.

If you’re certain you’ve had enough of your current package, check out a landline comparison site, such as HomePhoneChoices or FirstHelpline to find the current best deals around.

Save a bundle

Getting a bundle landline deal that includes broadband can save you money and hassle, as you’ll only have to pay one company for both bills.

However, with bundle deals, call costs outside your package allowance can be expensive. So always check that you’re getting a good deal on your broadband to suit your user needs.

You should also consider connection fees and installation fees that may occur. Below is a rundown on some popular landline and broadband bundles.

Provider

Benefits of package

Downsides of package

TalkTalk

One of the cheapest broadband and landline packages available with their Essentials package

Home phone call costs are expensive outside of a bundled package

Virgin Media

Fastest broadband speeds and download speeds, offers free digital TV with some packages

Home phone call costs are expensive outside of a bundled package

Plusnet

Cheap deals starting for £5.99 a month, plus line rental for a landline and broadband bundle

Expensive rates if you go over your call minutes allowance.

BT

Offers a great selection of extras with its bundles, such as free security software and online storage services

Relatively high package price compared to competitors.

Madasafish

Offers one of the UK’s cheapest line rental deals and has won awards for their customer service.

Packages come with set monthly download limits and customers will be charged £1.96 per GB they use over their allowance.

Before you sign up for a bundle deal, consider your needs as a consumer, such as if you need the fastest broadband and a high download limit.

Consider when you are most likely to make calls and how often you actually use your home telephone. Writing all these points down will help you find the perfect package for you.

Some providers, such as Sky and Virgin media, also offer TV packages within their bundles, which can save money. Make sure you check these out too before you make your decision.

Other money saving landline tips:

Payment options: Many providers will slice pounds off their bills if you pay by direct debit or upfront. Also, if you choose paperless bills that are sent to

We're paying over the odds for landlines. Here are five easy ways to get cheaper phone calls and save money

your email, you will also save money with some companies, including BT.

Off-peak charges: Check what time is considered as ‘off-peak’ as your supplier can change these times whenever they want without warning.

Always ensure you try and make calls within the off-peak time frame, as this will save you money in the long-run.

Do you actually need a landline?

The final point to consider is whether you actually need a landline. Most people have extensive mobile phone contracts that offer inclusive minutes and internet browsing.

You could always consider sticking with your mobile and investing in a dongle so you can have mobile internet and you could use Skype to make free calls via your computer.

With Ofcom lowering early termination fees, it’s a great time to change your landline provider if you’re unhappy with their service. Just make sure you make all the relevant checks before you do so.

You can pay for your landline rental with BT upfront for a year and this makes it about £9.50 per month.

A small correction, Emma: the company name is Madasafish ('Mad as a fish'), rather than 'Madafish'. They're at www.madasafish.com.

I recommend avoiding TalkTalk's broadband package. A friend who signed up for it has had endless problems with it, and now calls the company 'MuteMute'. Their tech support system is expensive to call and, I'm told, spectacularly useless. (Their response to "Do you support Linux?" was "What's a Linuck?") TalkTalk bought up my own telco a while back, and now phones me every few weeks to try to get me to use TalkTalk broadband. I tell them every time to stop calling me, and still the calls come. I'm about to change telcos just to stop the sales calls; your article couldn't have come at a better time.

Finally, remember that companies such as 18185 (at www.18185.co.uk) or 1899 (at www.call1899.co.uk) will often beat the major telcos' call charges, especially for long calls, calls overseas and calls to mobiles. If you realy want to minimise your phone bills, you'll want to route some calls via your telco and others through these cheap companies, depending on the nature of the call and the time when the call is made.

Have you tried the Telephone Preference Service? We've found it very effective at stopping cold calls (other than those from TalkTalk, who are exempt from the rules because we currently have a business relationship with them). Visit http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ for more details.

My vote for best broadband goes to Be Unlimited www.bethere.co.uk

Mostly it is for their excellent Customer Service and the way they communicate with you profusely during the procurement and commissioning process.

Their broadband is very fast as well. I use it for work ADSL and in some of our other properties.  I haven't seen contention and traffic shaping issues in the way you can get with some other ISPs. If you have an O2 phone you can get cheap broadband deals as O2 shares the BE network as well.

Previously I was with Bulldog, who got bought by Pipex, who then got swallowed up by Tiscali, who then got acquired by TalkTalk/aka Carphone Warehouse. Bizarrely I have had atrocious customer service from all of them so it is a relief that they are all now in one pile together, to be avoided at all costs.

After I left Pipex for BE Unlimited with a BT phoneline Pipex insisted I was still their customer and threatened to take me to court to recover their "debt". I had to send them copies of my BT and BE bills to prove to them I was now receiving service from someone else. If I never speak to another Bulgarian in my life I will be ecstatic!

If you want to get away from BT as your landline provider, BE Unlimited are planning to offer their own landline service for voice calls in addition to their broadband service.

This is from one of their press releases:

"BE was recently named Best Consumer Broadband by the Internet Services Providers' Association. The company offers high-quality speeds of up to 24MB and customers who choose to take a phone line from the company can choose from a range of bundles which include national and international call options."

    I can't wait!

No one to date has been able to cone down to their charges.

Their call centre resoponse is better than most.

I am a happy TalkTalk customer.

What about O2's offers? £7.50 or £10/month for unlimited internet (difference for speed) & £9.50 or £12.50/month for Home Phone including line rental (cheaper for free evening & weekend, £3 more for free anytime, 600 mins 0845/0870 & 600 mins of International to 20 countries)

So from £17/month they offer Unlimited Internet & Home Phone - better than madasafish? & a much better track record too! :D

The BT increase was the last straw. And yes, I know I could still get the service cheaper but, I also want quality.

I punished BT years ago! Anyone who puts up with their rip-off charges probably has more money than sense. All the telephone service providers need sorting out, with their attempts to bamboozle us all with their reams and reams of different call charges. Proper regulation is sadly lacking, and should be implemented to save us all from their excessive charges.

Yeah i kicked bt into touch ages ago, rubbish 2 meg broadband ( no intentions of upgrading our line) when i was paying for up to 16 meg. I was with them over the minimum time and they tried to charge me over a hundred pounds to quit. Apparantly they think its ok to "renew" my tie in by default... lots of phone calls later i got the charges waived but watch them they are slippery fish.

Currently with virgin, no complaints just wish it was cheaper.

Boycotted sky when they took sky one from virgin, now that was underhanded.

BT and sky have a long way to go to tempt me away from virgin

would love to leave BT, but yet to find anyone who can match their speed for broadband with unlimited download.

Also seem to fix problems asap (our broadband hub went down and one posted out within 24 hours), whereas everyone we know on other networks has tremendous problems with getting it fixed fast.

If anyone can suggest which is the fastest, cheapest with unlimited downloads and reliable - would love to hear.

Oh - and to the person saying to register with telephone preference service - that only works for calls made within UK and as 90% of ours are from foreign call centres these are not affected! (it is only a voluntary sign up a well at the moment)

I have a bundle with Virgin but I don't understand their charges! I am charged for M broadband but it's not mentioned in their tariff!! I don't use them for daytime calls anymore because of their sky high rates. For the past couple of years I have used 1899 for daytime landline calls at 1p per minute they can't be beaten! Calls to mobiles and those 0800 numbers are also cheaper....can't recommend this company highly enough!!

I was inundated with junk calls too - TPS sorted that out - rarely get them now.

For UK companies, using the TPS is mandatory, and has been for years. At http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/what/ it says: "It is a legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS."

UK companies using foreign call centres must also use the TPS register. However, http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/faq/#thirteen makes it pretty clear that foreign companies will get away with anyone they choose. You could try the old trick of saying "Just a moment while I turn off the

gas", putting the receiver down on the table, ignoring it for twenty

minutes or so, and then hanging up. If everyone did that, cold calls

    would soon stop.

BLOODY GREAT. One of the richest UK companies is going to rip us off even more, AND they redefine evening calls as after 7pm when friends and relatives are usually out.

Then Virgin, Talk-Talk and BT act as a CARTEL never mind anti-monopoly laws.

If like most of us you can't afford present monthly living costs, this is just going to push even more of us even more into debt.

Bet BT excutives get 20% or more pay rises, doubling THEIR pay EACH and EVERY four years . . . .

I agree very much with fireblade`s comments, as i was with bt and fell for their con, as i was tricked into their broadband deal, but found that i was paying two bills every other month at an average of £100-£130 for the broadband and the landline charges as they gave you a second line of which was really of no use whatsoever, and since i changed to talktalk, i have realised how much Bt had ripped me off, as my monthly bills are now around £24 for landline and broadband including their 24 meg speed boost.

I will not be leaving talktalk as i am very happy with this deal.

I'm with BT and will stay with them for landline. I pay around £20pm including all day free landline calls (including 0870, 0845), and the usual add ons (caller display, etc). I use Skype for calls abroad.

I wouldn't change BT to save a few quid, reliability is more important to me, as they control and maintain the network.

What's with all the moaners on here shouting rip off and stuff? Weren't they in UK 12-13 years ago when we all paid 4p/min local, 8p national calls and very expensive 4p/minute for very slow internet? I used to pay £50pm phone bill then excluding internet and had to watch the minutes, now £20pm and can talk as much as I want! I'm surprised BT is still in business making so much less money and having so much competition!!

There is a potential problem in changing from BT, if you have broadband with another provider that does not offer it's only lines you may not be able to change. Also, if you are someone that needs a working phoneline - say you are disabled, it can be terrible getting the line repaired via 3rd parties if you are not a BT Customer. - At least BT will normally repair a line for an elderly person very quickly.

My line has been losing sync and I lost TCP the other day with Talktalk and my broadband was off for a week once before I managed to get second line support in this country. Always ask for second line or even third line. They have an escalations department for difficult problems and you can always email the CEO Charles Dunstone at CPW.com. I've been with them for years after leaving Tiscali. I have a certificate in telecommunications and so can log into my router and boot it remotely. I handed control of my laptop to my mate in Sydney, Australia the other day and he showed me something on the net. My local hospital switchboard is on Opal telecom so I can call them free for up to 3 hours. They often put me on hold and i put them on speaker and do something else. I can call other Talktalk customers for up to 3 hours free, and my friend in Florida for up to an hour on her cell phone.

The international calls aren't so important now with Skype, but still useful. I updated my TalkTalk sub-domain website yesterday and have about 40 pages on there included in the deal. I could even call my mate in Australia for free or my mate in Poland, but we tend to use Skype or Windows live. We're all nerds, my mate in Sydney owns Phoenix computers and my mate in Poland is an ASP.NET senior web programmer. Lovemoney needs a ASP.NET programmer, but couldn't afford him!

For £22 a month I think the deal I'm on is OK. BT offered me a decent deal and free for a bit; but wanted 12 months in advance. I hate companies that do deals for advance payments, free periods, and crap that robs the most vulnerable in society. Transparency should be an OFCOM requirement; they are bloody useless.

You can do away with a physical phone-line and line rental charges altogether

I have a Virgin cable broadband connection, and use a Vonage VOIP phone as my 'landline' which runs over that, and unlike some VOIP systems, it supports 999. This system has a number of plus-points.

Cheap monthly rental (£8.99 for me, gives me free landline calls within the UK and most of Europe)

Ability to bar incoming calls with the number withheld.

Call forwarding and simultaneous ring : I have the calls forwarded to my mobile if it rings for more than 15 seconds without answering.

Emailed voicemails: handy when I'm travelling or away, enabling me to listen to any calls I've missed.

Portable: take the voip box with you anywhere there's an internet conenction, and you've got your landline with you.

multiple numbers on the same line, and/or mulitple lines. Handy as I run my business from home.

In my opinion, the days of copper landlines and line rental is numbered.

I have been with BT since forever, and I have always found them most reliable and have worked with my circumstances over the years, including when I moved and needed a line reconnected, even though they charged me over £120, but as I was paying direct debit all the time, they didn't need the money upfront and just continued with the monthly payment of £20 until it got cleared. Each time when I did have a problem on the phone line, it was solved within 24hrs, if not, less.

When talk talk decided to ring me and told me about a fantastic deal they were doing, I told them I wasn't interested, but they still took upon themselves to contact BT and had me disconnected from them, I had so much problem with talk talk, telling them that they had no right to do so and if they do not hand over my line back over, I would take the matter much further, but it still took them over 48hrs to do so, BT promptly rang and told me the second they got me back on their phone line.

Although BT is upping their prices again, I will continue to stay with them, as even if I have problem with my internet, I am still going to be able to contact my isp via the telephone rather than having to borrow someone's phone to talk to anybody.

You have been running this story for eight days now and it appears in my in-box at least twice a day. Please find something else to moan about.

I'm with BT for landline and broadband and have had excellent broadband service. I hate having to set up new broadband routers etc so it will take a lot to persuade me to change. Also had bad experience with talk talk when AOL sold its uk business to them. I went from great service (the broadband connection not the customer service) to virtually none when talk talk took over, I must have spent hours on the phone with them and they then had the cheek to over collect on the recurring visa transaction they had as their only method of payment and I only got a refund after threatening legal action.

Ofcom have decided to ban contracts which roll over automatically. The regulator has stated that such phone agreements make it too expensive to change to another provider and harm competition. Currently around 15% of people are signed up to these contracts. BT have expressed their disappointment with the decision.
