Supermarkets in new bout of fuel price cuts

Price cuts of up to 2p per litre at Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco forecourts.

Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco are all cutting the price of fuel on their forecourts once again from today (Tuesday).

Asda led the way, announcing a cut of up to 2p per litre on diesel and 1p per litre on petrol. This will take its average prices to 126.7 pence per litre on diesel and 123.7 pence per litre on petrol.

Sainsbury's wasted little time in responding, with the promise of an identical cut.

Tesco followed suit with the promise of a 1p cut on petrol. Diesel will also be cut by at least 1p, with some stations getting a 2p cut.

The move comes just two weeks after the three supermarkets cut fuel prices by up to 5p.

Simon Williams, fuel spokesman for the RAC, pointed out that while previous cuts have been down to the strong performance of the pound against the dollar, this latest cut is the result of falls in the global price of oil.

As a result motorists are now paying 7p a litre less for petrol and 11p for diesel than at the start of the year.
