Pay at the supermarket with your mobile phone

Updated on 08 October 2014 | 0 Comments

You can pay using your mobile phone at Sainsbury's, Asda and other retailers from next year.

From next year you will be able to pay for your shopping at Asda and Sainsbury’s using just your mobile phone.

A number of retailers, including the two supermarket giants, have signed up with Zapp, a mobile payments firm, to launch the service in 2015. Other retailers on board include House of Fraser, Clarks, Best Western Hotels and Thomas Cook.

You’ll even be able to pay your water bills with Anglian Water, Bristol & Wessex Water, and Sutton and East Surrey Water.

To take advantage of the technology, all you need is a smartphone and a mobile banking app. Before you pay you’ll be given the option of checking your balance and selecting exactly which account you want the payment to come from.

The payments work using digital ‘tokens’ which, according to Zapp, do not actually reveal any of their financial details to the retailers, meaning your information is secure.  All payments are covered by the same protection that normal debit card payments enjoy.
