Looking to save money in the home? Here's how you can pocket some extra cash in every room...

The Bedroom

How-to Guide Tips 1 tip on this task  |

If you've got a spare bedroom in your home that you don't really use, why not rent it out?

Under the Government's Rent a Room scheme, the first £4,250 you receive in rent is absolutely tax free. That comes to a little over £81 a week. And the great news is, you don't even have to be a homeowner to take part in the scheme! That said, if you are renting, you must check whether your lease allows you to rent a room out before doing so.

To find out more about this scheme, take a look at How to make an extra £4,250 per year! or why not ask a question on Q&A to get tips on renting to lodgers from the lovemoney.com community?

And, if you've got a tip of your own on how to save money in the bedroom, please post it below to help other lovemoney.com readers!

Ask your local Theatre about going on their "digs" list. You set a weekly rate as the bedding has to be washed, room cleaned etc whether they stay one night or 7. Most actors will stay less than a week as they travel day of 1st performance and leave after last so they can have a day at their own home. Stage crew may arrive Sunday night and leave Sunday morn. If show runs 2 or 3 wks they will probably go home for the wkend.

Plus: Include serve yourself breakfast (cereal, juice, toast) and ad-lib tea/coffee. It bumps your price but they rarely take up the offer. Most even shower at Theatre so literally just use the bed. If they have an annoying habit they'll be gone in a few days. Doesn't happen so often now, but there may also be bonus of free/discounted ticket for the show.

Minus: Don't expect to be booked every week of the year.
