How-to Guides » OLD GUIDE Spend less on your mobile

Hate receiving your mobile phone bill every month? Don’t put up and shut up – find out how to slash that bill and cut your costs!

Choose the right tariff

How-to Guide Tips 5 tips on this task  |

1) Shop around

As usual, if you want to get the best deal, you need to shop around! Mobile phone sites such as Omio have nifty little tools which will scour the thousands of deals available for you.

You simply use the slider tools to choose how many minutes and texts you need, together with how much you're willing to pay each month, and they’ll find a tariff to suit you.

2) Go online

One of the best things about buying your mobile phone online is you'll get more for your money.

For example, Orange offers nearly £5 off a range of plans if you order online, and O2 will give you double the amount of texts than you'd normally get if you choose an online plan.

It's also worth keeping your eyes peeled for cashback deals on websites such as Quidco and TopCashback.

3) Consider SIM only

Most providers have introduced SIM only deals over the past year or so, and these offer great value for money. You won't get a new phone - instead you'll get a shiny new SIM to pop into your existing handset - and you'll get many more minutes/texts for your money.

What's more, you don't have to get tied into an 18 or 24 month contract. Instead, you can choose to be on a 30-day rolling contract - so if something better comes along you can switch at a month's notice.

Read Slash your mobile bill in one easy step to find out more or to compare current deals use simonlycontracts.co.uk.

4) Count the cost of that swanky new phone

You'll get fewer minutes and texts with the new smartphones - so it's good to consider whether it's worth it. We tell you why the iPhone isn’t necessarily worth it and show you how two leading smart phones compare.

5) Haggle!

Finally, if you’re on an uncompetitive deal but don’t want the hassle of switching, why not call your existing provider to barter for a better deal? With so many networks vying for your business, you could soon have your provider on its knees, and provided you do your research, your existing network will often match, or better any deals you find.

It depends what you want out of life dosent it, I bought a refurb Blackberry off ebay for 40 pounds and five pounds delivery, I then used a 10pound a month contract from Virgin (the original phone went through the wash) You can get full connectivity for an extra 5 pounds per month - not that I have bothered. I have had this now for 6 months

I can recommend (and use) the Virgin SIM only deal which can be cancelled with one months notice. For £10 I get 200 mins of UK landline/cross network minutes plus 3000 texts. Excellent value for money and as far as I can see at least £5pm cheaper than any of their competitors. Internet (if you want it) is an add'l 30p/day. Beware of calls to Int'l or 08xx numbers where charges can be high. So use website 'Say no to 0845' to find alternative landline number (which they have to supply to overseas callers anyway) and use Skype/VOIP for Int'l calls.

Look out for cashback deals! For the next year, my bill is the equivalent of £6.67 per month. I was previously on Pay-as-you-go, topping up at least £10 per month so I'm saving money. I pay £15 per month for unlimited texts, Internet and 300 minutes but got a £100 cashback deal. After the 12 months are up, I'll look for the best deal again. See http://www.TopCashBack.co.uk/ref/pauljcg

If you get free/cheap Internet on your phone or have WiFi access on your phone at home or work, consider installing VOIP and instant messaging apps onto your phone and using these when your friends are online to avoid using your text and calls allowance.

Finally, take a moment to think before you use your phone. For non-urgent matters you could send an email, use Facebook or your landline to save your allowance. If you really need to talk to someone and have no allowance or shame, you could always call their phone and hang up in the hope they'll call your back!

Refurnished phones - most networks seem to do them and you get a decent amount of minutes, texts, etc at a lower price than a new phone on the same contract....

One word - Giffgaff. Basics: calls 8p min, texts 4p. Free calls and texts to other giffgaffers providing you top up with £10 every 3 months. Strictly PAYG. No rolling contracts, goodybags, eg. £5 gives you a months worth of unlimited free texts to any network. £10 gives you 150 mins calls to any network, unlimited free texts, unlimited data.

However for one month only if GiffGaff get 8500 facebook page likes by 15th November then you can get 190 minutes, free texts and unlimited data if you top up with a £10 goodybag between 15th November and 15 December. Works on the 02 network.
