How-to Guides » OLD GUIDE Save money in every room of your home

Looking to save money in the home? Here's how you can pocket some extra cash in every room...

The Kitchen

How-to Guide Tips 2 tips on this task  |

When whipping up a feast on your gas hob, make sure the size of the saucepan matches the size of the hob ring as this can save energy, and therefore money. If you see flames coming up the sides of the pan, you either need a bigger pan or a smaller hob!

You'll also save money and energy by turning off the hob or oven a few minutes early (leaving the food where it is) - there will still be sufficient heat for the food to continue cooking.

If you need to replace your white goods, buy new, more energy-efficient ones as this can really help to cut your energy bills and boost your savings. Look for the Energy Saving recommended logo as it's a simple and quick way to find the most energy efficient products.

You can compare the prices of energy saving products at the Energy Saving Trust website or why not ask a question on Q&A to get advice on energy-saving devices?

And, if you've got a tip of your own on how to save money in the kitchen, please post it below to help other lovemoney.com readers!

When you're cooking remember water boils at 100C and won't boil any higher unless you use a pressure cooker. So when the food is simmering it is at the highest temperature it will go, turning the heat up won't cook it faster! So simmer at the lowest possible setting. use a pressure cooker if you can, that saves energy by cooking much faster. Use a microwave again it cooks faster and saves energy. However the microwave is electric and electricity is more expensive than gas so the saving can be in time rather than that much cash. Am electric kettle is fast and efficient but more expensive than boiling an efficient kettle on a gas stove. The same applies to electric showers, they are more expensive than showers run from gas central heating. An electric shower can use a unit of electricity in 10 minutes. It mounts up if you spend a long time in the shower every day.

Boil only the water you need in a kettle, it boils faster using much less energy.

Heat water for pasta & veg faster by leaving the lid on the pan trapping the heat inside & the water will reach the temperature you require quicker!
