How-to Guides » OLD GUIDE Manage on a small budget

It's not so much about how much money you have but what your relationship is with your money. It's all about quality and not quantity.

Make cutbacks

How-to Guide Tips 9 tips on this task  |

1) Make your own lunch

Instead of buying a sandwich every lunchtime, simply make your own and take them into work.

A £1 packed lunch, rather than a £6 bought lunch, will save you £115 a month (based on 23 working days).

2) Ditch the coffee

If you currently buy two coffees costing £2.30 a working day, you'll make a saving of £105.80 a month by giving them up! Why not simply invest in a flask and make your own coffee at home to drink on the way into work?

3) Scrap the luxuries

Finally, get rid of all the luxuries you don't really need. This means cancelling the satellite TV subscription, the gym subscription and the magazine subscriptions. Giving up smoking and cutting back on the booze will also save you a packet.

I have made a great saving of around £3.20 per day! I decided to look at how far exactly I worked from the train station and instead of getting on the tube I walk to work...

No underground pushing and shoving, it takes only about 5 minutes longer to walk and I am getting some fresh air. A money saving tip and a lifestyle change!!

You can roast dandelion roots, grind them up and make your own cofee substitute. I can't stand the stuff; anyone got a tea substitute?

I gave up smoking in April 2003 and have stayed off for 6 years at around £50 a week at today's prices. It paid for my car in 2004. I suppose it's a total saving of £15,000 plus now. I have probably saved quite a lot giving up booze this year and can drive whenever I need to. There isn't much else I can give up that costs money. I could give up Christmas, with great pleasure; I doubt if people would let me though!

    Mike10613,

I'm quite partial to peppermint tea. Not quote as....exotic...as roasted dandelion roots but tastes nice even when it's cold.

In Tesco you can get 40 teabags for 99p!

By doing my shopping online I have saved a packet! I don't buy alcohol online, which is usually a massivie contributor to my shocking weekly food bill instore! By shopping with Tesco online it saves the things you have bought before so it doesn't take ages to shop. I always shop online with a shopping list, so that I'm not tempted to buy offers or extras, and I always try the own brand goods. Most of them are as good as branded, but loads cheaper! It also saves me trundling around the supermarket for an hour or so every week! Bonus!

join places like costco - it costs about £20 a year to be a member and you can save a packet. its a wholesale place where you can buy in bulk so me having two young kids is great for stuff like nappies / wipes etc. some things are no cheaper than in the shops, TVs etc but if you have a young or large family or are having people over for a party or dinner etc then this is worth a go. be careful that you ready the price tickets. they have the "before VAT price" in large font to get your attention then the "incuding VAT" price in the corner.

i think they are nationwide, i am a member at Milton keynes and i know there is one also in Watford.

    hope this helps
