How-to Guides » OLD GUIDE Destroy your debt

If your credit card bills and debts are getting you down it's time to make a stand - here are five easy ways to start.

Step two: Start a spending diary

How-to Guide Tips 5 tips on this task  |

You'll need to get a good grip on how much you're spending in order to set up a budget, and the most effective way to do this is to start a spending diary.

Just grab a small notebook and keep it in your bag/pocket for a week (a month would be even better) noting into it every time you spend money. And that's anything - from a latte and sandwich for lunch to a 30p packet of crisps on your way home.

This will give you a true picture of how much you spend - and once you see it in black and white it should help you decide what a worthwhile purchase is and where you could be saving money.

If you own an iPhone or iPod Touch, there are lots of free applications you could use to keep track of your spending as well. Read Five free ways to spruce up your finances for an in-depth review of the top five.

Make it easier to track your spending by paying for most things using your debit card - even coffee shops let you use your card to pay for a latte. This way your bank will do the diary for you in the form of your statement. And you can just take out a small sum each week for absolute cash essentials.

Yeah that's a good point about the debit card. It's often quite revealing when you look back at your statements and see where all your money has gone.

An alternative, of course, is to take out a set amount of cash each day, and once you've run out, that's it.

It's not so easy to stick to though, but it is very interesting to see exactly how much you need to survive on each day, and how much time your cash actually lasts if you really try to eke it out and refuse to buy stuff because you literally don't have the money.

This task was one of Ed's tips in his recent video "How to save when you've got no money" It also contained lots of ideas on where to get extra cash - which you could use to pay off your debts rather than save.

It's well worth going back through old bank statements and credit card statements for subscriptions and payments to services that you no longer use of want. A few years ago, I did that and saved several hundred pounds a year.
