Choose your accommodation wisely

How-to Guide Tips 4 tips on this task  |

1) Be adventurous

When was the last time you went camping? Why not brave the outdoors and go camping or caravanning? This will be far cheaper than a hotel and can be a lot of fun – particularly if you have kids.

Alternatively, stay at a youth hostel! Many hostels provide rooms suitable for families and couples - as well as traditional dormitory-style accommodation. Check out the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) website for more information.

2) Go self-catering

Rent out a villa or a cottage instead of a hotel and you could save heaps! You’ll no longer have to pay for expensive meals out and instead can cook in the comfort of your own ‘home’!  Check out Holiday-rentals.co.uk to locate self-catering accommodation across the globe.

3) Live a life of luxury

Alternatively, maybe you’re looking for a swanky hotel room but don’t fancy paying the upmarket price tag. Then why not look into booking a top secret hotel room? Although you won’t be told exactly where you’re staying when you book, smart Sherlocks can still figure it out with a few extra clicks of a button. And, at nearly half the normal asking price, you could pick up a real bargain.

4) Book last minute

While booking in advance can be a great way to bag a bargain, booking last minute could save you even more. So if you’re fairly flexible about when and where you want to go, check out websites such as Lastminute.com or Teletext Holidays for some great deals. Read When booking last minute is worth it for more information.

5) Listen to fellow travellers

When choosing a place to stay, it always helps to get a better (and more realistic) picture of where you’re staying. So check out Tripadvisor which provides hundreds of candid reviews of hotels and popular attractions around the world  - as well as user photos. Read Travel tips from a pro for more handy advice.

6) House swap!

If you fancy trying something a little different, why not swap your home for someone else’s for the duration of the holiday! Check out websites such as UKHolidaySwapShop, Intervac, Homelink and Geenee. Read Property swap shop for more information.

I am looking online for hotels in Barcelona at the moment and came across this site which features nice hotels, hostels and apartments at good prices. Also includes places in Madrid and Amsterdam.

Also lastminute.com and others aren't alway the cheapest. Always check the hotel's website rates too for the dates you want. When recently booking a 3 night stay in Malaga I have gone for one hotel on the first night near the train station as we get in late then moving to another on the next two nights. One was considerably cheaper on the hotel's own website by £40 + the other was a better deal on last minute.

Try Tripadvisor.co.uk they have ratings and comments on almost all hotels anywhere in the world. I find it to be really accurate. On top of that the website has links to other websites offering the best prices for hotel rooms and flights. I just saved around £400.

If one is really hard up and cannot afford a holiday or short break abroad; The best no frills but clean basic reasonable accomodation for singles couples or a small family for up to 3 people per room called "family" sized rooms with a king size bed en suite shower opr bath tea and coffee making facilities plus pull out sofa for 2 children included in the price  are the on line deals for Travel lodge. They are cheaper than the other hotel chains and in my opinion one of the best chain hotels for the budget minded customer. You can find their website on: www.travelodge.co.uk Do you know they have on line bargains for as little as £12 sometimes less? Especially when booking in advance. I have enjoyed many a nice weekend with my husband and or the children when they were younger for a great price. But watch the car parking. some hotels dont have any and the local NCH ones cost you dear. The other good thing is if you get a hotel which provides breakfast this is only £6.00 per person and I think kids eat half price that or free!
