How-to Guides » OLD GUIDE Beat the petrol price hikes

Fuel-saving tips and cheaper car running advice to help you save money on your motoring, and beat the recent petrol price hikes.

Join a car club

How-to Guide Tips 1 tip on this task  |

If you only make a few trips a week, you could save thousands by joining a car club.

Car clubs are a half-way-house between owning a car and using public transport. They're ideal for people who drive a car rarely or occasionally, but would like the luxury of having access to one when the need arises.

To qualify, you need to be at least 18 and have held a valid driver's licence for at least a year. You will also need to meet criteria regarding accident claims and road convictions.

You apply either online or by phone. According to how much you'll be driving, you then decide on the appropriate price plan, and pay an upfront membership fee which can be an annual or one off charge.

When you're up and running, you can book a car online, by phone, or sometimes by text. You then simply turn up, unlock the car with a special ‘smartcard', and drive away.

You can hire a car for any period from an hour to several days. You also get some free mileage included per day, with additional distance charged per mile.

Most cars are tracked electronically to record accurate time and mileage data, so you don't even need to do any complex calculations. You drive, the bill is calculated for you and sent to you at the end of the month.

The savings could potentially be huge. According to the AA, the average cost of owning a car used for two trips per week is £2,749 a year. Streetcar says the same journeys made using a car club would cost you just £707. That's a £2,042 saving.

I do this, I joined zipcar.co.uk. I've got about 5 plusses for doing this and a couple of minuses:

    Plusses:

    - The technology they use is amazing. You use a plastic card, the size of a credit card, held against a receiver on the windscreen to lock and unlock the car when you have the car booked. It's a bit like a card to get into offices at work or like an oyster card you use for transport in london. One evening my card wasn't working even though I had the car booked, so I called the 24 hour helpline. I went through to a US call centre where the agent was able to unlock the car from his location! He got me to look in the boot where there was a spare card, which he then programmed for me to be my new card. All on the phone. All from a remote location.

    - Locations. There are cars just around the corner from my house. There are cars just around the corner from where I work. This may be a coincidence but recently they put two new cars within 25 metres of my home. Literally no different to having your own car parked outside.

    - Costs. I don't use a car more than once every 7 days. It works out about £50 a month, about the same price as just the insurance for a banger with just 3rd party cover. The best way to save money is to try to limit weekend usage and always opt for the cheaper cars.

    - Extras. My girlfriend is on the scheme too. If I hire a car, she can still drive it. If we go to New York or other US cities we can use zipcar there at no extra cost. Congestion charge is included. Petrol up to a certain limit is also included, fine for city driving, a bit extra for longer journeys. They've added iPod connectors to all of their cars.

    - Lack of hassle. Once you get used to booking your car when you need it, there really are no other hassles. No repairs, insurance, depreciation, bumps, scratches, oil changes and cleaning to do.

    - Testing new cars. I've driven four different cars so far. It's more like having access to your own fleet of brand new cars than access to 'a pool car'.

    Minusses

    - I still pine for a nice little convertable of my own for a weekend of touring the countryside. It would be nice if there were one or two luxury cars in my 'fleet'.

    - Weekend prices. Weekend use comes at a premium which is frustrating and feels like a tax.

That's it, on the whole I would highly recommend Zipcar to everybody, but check there are cars local to you first.
