Why do the Co-op not feature in this article? I regularly use the Co-op for top-ups between main Sainsbury shops. They don't have the range of groceries that Sainsbury have, but they are generally good value and some of their own-brand items are exceptional. For instance fair trade pure cocoa worked out cheaper 100g than Sainsburys best pack. My Co-op sells locally produced beef, so you know where it is coming from, and sources fruit and veg locally where possible.

While some Aldi items are good value, be very careful. A lot of their meat is packaged in Europe where the animal welfare standards are lower and of course there is a risk that what says beef on the label now may not be. I don't eat beef but if I had done, I would be giving up now.

I like Aldi for grocery items like pasta and rice. Their own brand cereals are OK too.

Their frozen food is generally OK, although a pack of chips had a lot of wastage through inedible small pieces of potato that would burn before they cooked. In view of the recent horsemeat scare, I would be put off buying any processed meat dish from Aldi, although I avoid anything like that and prefer to cook from scratch.

From a £3 special offer pack of chicken thighs and some root veg, bought in Sainsburys last week, I made a casserole which cost less than £1.50 a generous portion. This would have easily stretched to a family of 4 who could have cooked jacket potatoes alongside the casserole, saving on energy.

Look for packs of 12 rather than 6 or 8 own-brand Cumberland sausages at a bargain price - same size and quality sausage as the 8-pack, this has been available for my last 3 visits.

I buy my eggs at a local farm which still grade them as small, medium and large, but charge me about 20p per half dozen less than any of my local supermarkets - and of course they are fresher - only a few days old as opposed to weeks old for some supermarket eggs. Some of their veg are more expensive than the supermarket but are very good quality. Another farm shop has loose frozen food which can work out considerably cheaper than pre-packs.

Eating out, I just had an email from my local Crown Carvery offering me two meals for £7 if both people buy a drink, and £3.99 a meal for parties of up to 5. There are other offers available , including free meals for children. valid between 18 Feb and 4th May with some exceptions like Mothers' Day and Easter. You can find your local Crown Carvery on their website and sign up for offer emails and downloadable vouchers.
