Don’t spend a fortune on your Pancake Day ingredients!

Pancake Day on a budget

It’s Shrove Tuesday this week, which can only mean one thing – pancakes! We’ve put together a round-up of all the best deals on your pancake ingredients.

Flour

One of the main constituents of a pancake is flour. And luckily it shouldn’t cost you a fortune to snap some up!

You can get 500g own brand flour from Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco for just 40p, while Waitrose’s own brand is just 2p more at 42p.

If you’d rather go a little more upmarket, 1Kg of Homepride plain flour is cheapest at Asda at £1.48 per pack. Alternatively 1Kg packs of Allinson Nature Friendly plain white flour is £1 at Asda, or two for £2 at Tesco.

Eggs

You can’t have pancakes without eggs!

If you’re just after the cheapest eggs you can get, both Tesco and Asda have their own brand eggs at just 69p for six. You’ll pay an extra 10p for Sainsbury’s eggs.

If you want to go for some slightly fancier eggs, six free range eggs from The Happy Eggs Co. will set you back £1.70 at Sainsbury’s, Asda, Tesco and Ocado. However, if you love your eggs, make sure you go to Sainsbury’s, as you can get two packs for just £2!

Finally, if you really want to push the boat out, Clarence Court free range duck eggs will set you back £2.15 for a box of six at Waitrose.

Milk

For whole milk, there’s very little between the main supermarkets. An own-brand, two-pint carton will set you back 89p at each of Waitrose, Asda, Tesco and Ocado, while it’s only a penny more at Sainsbury’s.

It’s pretty much the same story with semi skimmed – Asda and Tesco will set you back 89p for a two-pint carton, Waitrose and Ocado a penny more.

If you’d prefer to go for some Yeo Valley organic fresh semi skimmed, then it’s £1 for one litre everywhere, though at Ocado you can get two for £1.60 until the 21st February.

Sugar

You have to have some caster sugar sprinkled over the top of your pancakes!

500g packs of Silver Spoon caster sugar are cheapest at Tesco, where they cost £1.19. However, an extra 49p you can get a 1Kg pack of Billington’s natural golden caster sugar at Sainsbury’s.

Lemon

The finishing touch for most of us when making pancakes is a dash of lemon juice.

If you’re happy to go for the bottled stuff, then head over to Asda or Tesco where an own brand 250ml bottle will set you back just 41p. Or if it simply has to be Jif, then Sainsbury’s and Waitrose are cheapest, at 52p for a 55ml carton. Both Asda and Tesco are offering two for £1 deals, so you can’t really lose!

But you can’t beat doing it yourself. Loose lemons are 30p each at Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

Jazzing up your pancakes

Now the above ingredients will help you make a pretty basic pancake. But there are all sorts of ways you can make your pancakes far more exciting, from adding custard to crispy bacon and mushrooms!

Head over to our sister site Lovefood for a brilliant round-up of all sorts of different pancake recipes. And remember to check MySupermarket to work out where those extra ingredients will work out cheapest!

What's more, over at Lovefood there's a brilliant competition this week. Just take a picture of yourself flipping pancakes and post it on the Lovefood Facebook wall, and you could win a pancake making kit from Just Milk.

My suggestion is that you check Lidl for the prices of the above ingredients - and for many more items.

The quality is always excellent, many products sourced from Germany, and the prices inbelievably competitive.

I could not believe this "pancake day on a budget" what could be cheaper to cook than pancakes.
