Welcome to this week's edition of Frugal Food.
Best supermarket deals
This week we’re going to kick off with LIDL where you can buy a 1kg pack of nectarines for £1.29, saving you 70p, and a twin pack of little gem lettuce for 50p, saving you 19p. And this weekend only, there are half-price watermelons up for grabs, now £1.84, and half-price Blossom Honey, now £1.32. For a meat bargain, you can buy two lamb shanks (750g) for only £4.29 (70p off) and Fairview Farm turkey escalopes for £1.99.
There’s also a Taste of America promotion to make the most of – look out for McKennedy brand bargains such as a 700g ready-to-bake The Big Apple Pie for £1.49, American style mustard for 69p, 500g of chicken dippers for £2.49 and Mickey Mouse cupcake mix for 99p.
You can treat yourself on the cheap at Tesco with The Fabulous Bakin’ Boys chocolate flapjack fingers for 70p, reduced from £1.50 (or try the Golden Oaty fingers instead) and for only £1 you can get a host of biscuits including Cadbury Crunchie Biscuits (was £1.79), Fox’s Rocky Bars (was £1.59) and Maryland Cookies (was £1.29).
You can also buy 1.5L of Napolina extra virgin olive oil for £6, saving you £2.49, and for other store-cupboard items, get 275g of Tesco whole black peppercorns for £2.85 (was £3.05), Very Lazy Garlic for £1.37 (was £1.47) and four tins of Heinz Multigrain Spaghetti for £1.50 (was £2.09).
There are some good buys for stocking up the cupboards at Sainsbury’s too with own-brand organic soups reduced from 79p to 39p – choose from carrot, coriander and ginger, or lentil, tomato and vegetable – and £1 off Farringtons dressings, now only £2.49, which includes balsamic vinegar salad dressing, classic vinaigrette and honey and mustard dressing.
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference British breaded ham has also been reduced, from £2.79 to £1.39, and you can save 59p on Taste the Difference prosciutto de speck, now £2. Other meat deals include £1 off packs of organic beef rump steak, now £4 for 334g, and boneless butterflied lamb leg for £9.99 per kg, down from £11.99 per kg.
Next up the ASDA best buys which include British iceberg lettuce for 85p (was £1) a 6-pack of Petits Filous for £1 (was £1.48), Weetabix Oatibix for £2 (was £2.48) and various Batchelors Super Noodles for 40p (was 69p).
And, if you’ve on the hunt for £1 bargains you can get a Terry’s Chocolate Orange (was £2), a 4-pack of Maynards Wine Gums (was £1.55), a 7-pack of Hula Hoops (was £1.59) and a special 1kg fridge pack of Heinz baked beans (was £1.78).
Over at NETTO’s this weekend you can buy a large chicken for £3.48, usually £4.48, 200g Carte Noire refill pouches for £4, Hellmann’s French and Caesar dressing for 79p and then from Monday, buy 2 triple packs of John West No Drain tuna chunks in sunflower oil or brine for £4 (usually £2.49 each) and 1kg of bananas for 68p.
Finally, online butcher WESTIN GOURMET is this week offering Angus Ribeye steaks for just £5.84 a steak (usually £6.88) and pork loins for £13.95 per 2.5kg joint (usually £17.05).
Tipple
You can buy 15 bottles of Budweiser (300ml) at LIDL for £9.99, or as part of the Taste of America promotion mentioned above, buy a bottle of Jim Beam bourbon for £16.99 and Californian Old Vine Zinfandel for £4.99.
Check out the deals of the month at Marks and Spencer which have all been reduced by 30% - options include a case of Bouches du Rhône 2010 for £29.35, was £41.94, a case of Cucao Central Valley Chardonnay 2008 for £31.45, was £44.94, and a case containing 20 bottles of Somerset Traditional Cider for £29.85, was £39.80.
