Financial talk not welcome on Facebook

Check out the results of our survey on what people use Facebook for....

I've always been a bit slow when it comes to fashion and trends. I had lived on this earth for 41 years before I used hair gel for the first time and I've only started to watch 'The Wire' in the last week.

I was similarly slow when it came to Facebook and didn't become an active user until 2009. But like many late converts, I'm pretty keen these days and log in at least once a day.

One thing has struck me though. Just about everything I've seen on Facebook has been pretty light and social. People don't seem to be talking much about more serious stuff. A bit of politics maybe, but that's it.

Anyway, here at lovemoney.com we thought we'd do a survey on what our readers are using Facebook for.

Here are the results:

How lovemoney.com users use social media sites

Catching up with people they haven't seen for years

58.8%

Gossiping

29.2%

Arranging nights out

20.4%

Spying on people

10%

Job hunting

7.2%

Money matters

5%

Dating

2.3%

Other

32.5%

So most people aren't using Facebook for finance. I think that's a shame. Talking about money may not be very British but I think it's a good way to improve your financial skills and knowledge. To get the ball rolling, we've set up a lovemoney.com Facebook page. Let the conversation begin....

I think this is a very bad idea! I am a facebook user for social reasons (and for spying on the teeange children!) but would never dream of disclosing my personal financial situation on facebook. Every now and then the facebook guys change all the settings which means that (or may mean that) everything you write becomes public until you cotton on to the fact that you need to reset your security settings. No no no. Not interested.
