Eleven days out of the office, only three days off work

Thanks to William and Kate's engagement, you can take a nice long break whilst only taking three days off work.

I'm delighted to see that the date for the royal wedding has been set - Friday, April 29th.

That doesn't mean I'm an ardent monarchist. I'm not, I'm more of a lukewarm monarchist really.  My excitement is all about holidays.

You see, the wedding is going to be a bank holiday and will happen on the Friday after Easter. So the Friday before the wedding, April 22nd, will be a bank holiday (Good Friday) and the following Monday - April 25th - will also be a bank holiday as it's Easter Monday. So there will be three bank holidays in the space of eight days. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the royal wedding.

And it doesn't end there. The Monday after the wedding - Monday, May 2nd - will also be a bank holiday as it's the Mayday holiday.

So all you need do is book off Tuesday April 26th to Thursday April 28th as holiday and you could stay away from your workplace for eleven days whilst only using three days of your holiday entitlement. It's going to be like another Christmas lull. Not much will get done and businesses will suffer. But it'll be fun.......

    Hello rbgos,

Fair enough, I should have acknowledged that the situation is different in Scotland

And I take the point that an extra bank holiday is bad news for many self-employed people and freelancers

However, I disagree with the suggestion that we should abolish bank holidays. We might move some of the days - it's silly to have two in May - but the concept is good. That's because if everyone is on holiday it's easier to arrange family get togethers which I think are very good for society as a whole. So that's my take....

    Thanks for the comments,

    Ed

saveasuearn hasn't thougth about some of the difficulties in staggering holidays for schools, but I am certain that Headteachers won't be authorising many holidays for children over the three days back in school. Particularly for children in years 2 and 6.
