Trade in your old radio!

Fancy getting up to 20% off a new DAB radio? Here’s how...

Hot on the heels of the car scrappage scheme, the government is launching ‘Radio Amnesty’, an initiative in which anyone with an old analogue radio can trade it in and get up to 20% off a brand new funky DAB radio model.

The scheme is being launched after it was announced that in 2015, the analogue signal will be switched off and all radios will run digitally. The aim is to encourage people to buy a DAB radio and prepare themselves for the big switch-over.

Participating retailers, such as Argos, Comet, John Lewis and Tesco, will offer discounts of between 10% to 20% off to anyone who trades in their old radio between 22 May and 26 June. All redundant radios will be reconditioned and sent off to southern Africa to enable young people to have access to radio programmes. And if your radio is completely beyond repair, it will simply be recycled!

So what are you waiting for?

This article came under 'money saving tips'. How does spending £90 instead of £100 on an unnecessary object, and sending the thing it replaces half way across the world (surely the transport cost would be more than a new radio?) qualify as saving money?

It's on a par with the Tesco slogan 'Helping you spend less every day'; sounds like they're refusing to sell you more than you bought last week!

I for one will not be handing in any analogue radio. I do have a digital radio, and it is a hunk of junk. The reception is bad in out area, but we can pick up analogue stations without any difficulty. If no one "takes advantage" of this scheme, there will be no digital switchover. The only beneficiaries of this will be the oxbridge mafia at the BBC, and the fatcats at the power companies.
