Frugal Christmas: Budget gifts for men

Now it’s time for the men in your life! If you’ve already got the socks and pants covered and need some more ideas take a look at this selection of budget buys for all budgets.

Best-buy electricals and gadgets

The Pocket Boom is such a neat gadget and a great Christmas gift idea for tech fans. Basically this clever little thing enables you to turn any surface into a speaker. All you do is plug it into a 3.5mm headphone jack, play your music and then put the sticky pad on the surface of your choice (I had a look at the review and apparently empty boxes work well!). Get it exclusively from Mobile Fun for £24.95 (RRP £29.99).

If he’s addicted to all things Apple he’ll want the gadgets to boot. This iPhone 4 Horn Stand will help him crank up the volume. The stand amplifies the iPhone speaker by up to 13 decibels, without any wires. I found it cheapest at Amazon – only £12.99 with free delivery, which saves you a handy £7.

I also had to mention this Robot USB hub – only £7 (was £10) at BHS which will give you four extra 2.0 hi-speed ports, with LED indicators in the Robot's eyes. It even has moveable arms and legs so doubles up as a bit of a big boys' toy!

Bargain beauty and fragrance

You can often pick up designer brand aftershave fairly cheaply compared to women’s perfume, but you can still get stung if you don’t shop around. Generally that means going online, so if you are looking to buy him some this Christmas, start looking now. Cheapsmells is a good place to start – Hugo Boss In Motion (White Edition) 40ml is only £23.60 (RRP £35), but you can use comparison sites FragrancesCompared and CheapPerfumeExpert to find the lowest price.

Amazon is always worth a look for beauty products but you do have to be prepared to dig around. I found this Tweezerman Essential Grooming Set for Men for £17.95 + £1.54 delivery – the next best price I saw was £24 at Feel Unique so you would save yourself over £4.50.

Right now at Superdrug you get free delivery on all orders so you don’t pay a penny for the privilege of shopping from the comfort of your own home (unless you like noisy crowds of people pushing and shoving each other of course!). Top deals include half-price Oral B and up to 50% off selected Nivea and L’Oreal – plus if you buy today use the code XMAS5OFF for 15% off a £30 spend courtesy of

Frugal fashion

If you want to buy him some clothes or accessories but you don’t know anything about men’s fashion head to a well-known site such as Asos – most of what they stock is bang on trend so you don’t need to worry about buying him a ‘grandad’ jumper. Right now you can save 25% on brands such as this American Apparel striped t-shirt (reduced from £22 to £16.50), this Adidas Originals t-shirt (reduced from £25 to £18) and this Carhartt sweater (reduced to £50 to £37.50). Do give the sale section the once over too – this Lee David long sleeve check shirt has been reduced from £45 to just £10 and these Calvin Klein striped socks are £8 (RRP £12).

BHS has some great deal on men’s clothes and accessories in the sale section; this blue contrast t-shirt is half-price at £3, these formal trousers are only £7 (was £18) and this long sleeve check shirt is £16 (was £24).

There are also some big discounts at Debenhams this week with up to 30% off designer brands such as this Jasper Conran navy merino wool jumper for £31.50 (was £45), 30% off selected suits, up to 40% off boxed shirt and tie sets such as this Jeff Banks shirt and tie sets for £25.20 (was £42), half-price Craghoppers such as this fleece for £15 (was £30) and nightwear – I like this John Rocha blue coral fleece dressing gown which is half-price at £25.

Then save even more money using the code CH97 which knocks another 10% off!

Something a bit different

I have to confess that I find most of the specialised gift websites out there really rubbish (usually full of overpriced tack and silly novelty items). You’re far better off looking on design-led sites such as Bouf if you’re in need of some inspiration. I had a look and found this London Underground Monopoly board game with £10 off, now £19.99

There are some interesting bits on Thabto too – I like these Mood Mugs which are £8.95. Choose from Monstrously Moody, Happy as Larry, Seriously Sleepy, Horrible Hungover and Cheeky Chappie! Novelty mugs are usually a bit naff but these are handmade porcelain mugs, designed with double wall insulation so they don't need handles. We’ve also managed to wangle a 10% discount code for readers so enter the code LOVEMONEY10 at the checkout.

Top stocking fillers for under £5

There are plenty of accessories under a fiver at Debenhams right now including this beanie hat and reversible fleece scarf, both £4.20 each, and these Red Herring knitted gloves for £4.90. You can also buy iPod Nano jelly covers for £4, colourful Philips headphones for £5 and Exspect Touchpens to use with the iPhone, iTouch and Blackberry Storm which are also £4.50.

I also found this Genie head massager for only £1.89 (RRP £9.99), this nose and ear hair trimmer for £2.99 (RRP £9.99) and this Gimble book holder for £2.55 (RRP £4.99) at Chemist Direct.

Luxury for less

The Bluebeards Revenge offers quality men's grooming and skincare products with many retailing at under £10 including a premium quality shaving cream for £9.99 which is paraben free and contains added ingredients (such as Decelerine) designed to reduce hair growth and tackle those annoying shaving issues such as razor rash and ingrowing hairs. The 100ml bottle should last between two and three months, so a little goes a long way.

You can also buy pre-shave oil and post-shave balm for £9.99 each, a 'doubloon' shaving brush for £6.99 and anti-perspirant deodorant for £3.

Novelty mugs are ALWAYS naff. £8.95 and no handles does nothing to mitigate the naffness factor. Why people insist on giving each other crap which is amusing for ten seconds then goes straight to the car boot sale box is beyond me. If a man is handy at fixing things just buy him some nice quality tools. No real man ever has enough screwdrivers and better to buy one nice one which will last 25 years than tons of junk he doesn't really need. If he's too dumb to do DIY, your problems are bigger than what he'd like for Christmas.
