Make your flowers last twice as long

Flower expert Alejandro Uribe reveals some top tips to help your Mother's Day last longer and ensure you get your money's worth.

Alejandro Uribe, flower expert and founder of online florist, Blossom & Twigs, believes that all too often flowers last just a few days, when really they should live up to 10 days - providing you bought from a florist that supplies fresh flowers and you look after them properly.

So if you are lucky enough to receive flowers this Mother’s Day, make sure you follow Alejandro’s tips to get your money’s worth and make your flowers last much longer...

  • Always feed your flowers. You will be sent a sachet with your bouquet, so make sure you read and follow the instructions. Using the flower food in the correct dosage will help prolong the life of your flowers.
  • Cut stems diagonally so as to allow flowers to drink up water. The cut which exposes the capillaries (that suck up the water) will have sealed/scarred over so you need to make a fresh cut so they can drink!
  • Transfer into a clean vase as soon as possible.
  • Clean the water daily. Remove leaves and foliage from the water every day. If you do not, bacteria will be produced, which will be sucked up and block the capillaries so they cannot absorb any water. This is a particular danger with flowers such as roses.
  • Do not put next to radiators because this will dehydrate flowers.
  • Do not put flowers in direct sunlight! They may look nice in your window, but putting flowers in direct sunlight, draughts, or hot locations cause dehydration and flowers will die sooner.
  • Remove flowers as they fade and reduce bacteria.
  • Keep them cool. Flowers actually live longer in a cool environment. If the flowers are subject to higher temperatures, such as in summer, or if the central heating is on high, the water in the vase may become too hot which will accelerate stem rot. If it is very warm, change the water daily and clean the vase.

Provided that you follow these instructions, your flowers should last up to 10 days. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day.

    I was told to cut the stems at an angle and then did the stems into boiling water for 10 seconds and then into the vase or container with cold water in it. This takes out the are contained in the stems and keeps a good water flow to the flower heads.
