The recession clearly has its downsides, but it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. After all, the recession actually offers some great bargains. Just take a look at these...

Cheaper homes

For a start, if you're looking to buy a new home, you'll find property at significantly lower prices compared to a couple of years ago - and you might even be able to snap up a repossessed property at a really fabulous price.

That said, if you're a first-time buyer struggling to get a deposit together and get a mortgage, that's not necessarily going to help much.

Cheaper cars

If you're looking to buy a brand new fancy car - this is the time to do it! With fewer people purchasing new cars, car makers and dealers are being forced to significantly lower their prices.

Furniture bargains

Similarly, if people aren't moving home, they're less likely to buy furniture. Many stores have been offering some great bargains on furniture over recent months - so if you're planning to stay put and do your home up, what are you waiting for?

Tradesmen

In a similar vein, if you need an odd-job doing round the home, you're likely to have tradesmen fighting for the position. With many struggling to find work, you're more likely to receive some very competitive quotes. A good website to use when quote hunting is MyBuilder.com

Mobile phone deals

Thanks to the recession, it's now much easier to get a cheaper mobile phone deal. Many providers have introduced SIM only deals, for example, which offer great value for money. And if you're still not happy with your mobile deal, try a spot of haggling. Many mobile networks are so desperate for your custom, you might be surprised at how many of your wishes are granted!

Restaurant deals

So many restaurants have 2 for 1 offers on at the moment - in fact, you'll be spoilt for choice. I'm going to really miss those when things pick up! Check out our Frugal Food round up for the latest offers.

Holiday bargains

In a bid to win our custom, travel companies are also lowering their holiday prices to tempt us overseas. Yippee! Similarly, hotels need to fill their rooms, so there's a good chance you can pick up a bargain. Check out Late Rooms, Lastminute.com and Hotels.com for some great hotel deals.

So you see, the recession isn't all bad news. So I reckon, if you can, you should make the most of these bargains while they last!
