The best deal depends very much on how you use the phone. For example, suppose you're a light user, or that most of your phone calls are made to family members. Suppose also that you're happy to keep the same phone for three years instead of two. (It's the green thing to do, and it'll save you a packet.) You could buy an HTC Desire outright for, say, £300 (or less on Ebay), get a free Sim from giffgaff, and buy a £10 goodybag every 30 days, entitling you to unlimited free calls to family and friends on giffgaff, 150 minutes a month to other numbers, unlimited texting, and unlimited Internet use (hence no nasty surprises if you get carried away on YouTube one month).

    Cost with Orange: £28.08 * 36 = £1010.88

    Giffgaff: £300 + £10 * 37 = £670

(The giffgaff cost reflects the initial cost of the phone plus the 37 thirty-day goodybags that you'll buy during the three years.)

You save £340 and you still have the same gorgeous phone. If you keep the phone for more than three years, the cost difference is even larger. And, if you exceed your prepaid talk time, giffgaff charges you 8p per minute for phone calls; Orange charges you 20p per minute.

I'm not yet a giffgaff customer, but for people who can afford to buy a phone rather than getting a "free" phone on hire purchase from one of the major telcos, giffgaff does look like a better deal.

(For anyone who can't find £300 without borrowing, I question whether spending £28 a month on a mobile phone is a good idea. Get a cheap phone; use the difference to pay off debts and then build up savings. A grumpy middle-aged man speaks!)

Thanks for this MLaker - just what I needed. I had a normal phone quite happily for the past 20 years or so but all my colleagues had android phones and I felt i was either missing out or should bring myself up to date. I wanted to treat myself to a toy but I am allergic to anything which ties me into a contract. I am currently on orange pay as you go. I have a plan which gives me 5 free texts a day and so I very rarely go over this. On average i top up £10 every 8-10 months. Really. I never use my mobile to chat just the old 'I am at the shops, shall I buy xyz...' kind of calls. I got a HTC wildfire for myself for Christmas on PAYG. I have broadband at home so use this to download, play games etc.

My friends and colleagues have told me I am STUPID not to have the phone on a monthly purchase contract. I have explaiined til I am blue in the face only to be looked at like I am totally insane. I tried to point out i am far from stupid. Your above post proves me right.

I will print it and show them.

    Thank you!
