Now really is the last chance to get a cheap fixed energy prices before your bills sky rocket.

SSE becomes third energy supplier to hike prices

Scottish & Southern Energy has become the latest of the Big Six suppliers to raise its prices this summer. Its gas prices will go up by 18% and electricity by 11% from 14th September, mirroring ScottishPower’s rise that comes into effect 1st August. Customers will see their bills rise by an average of £170 per year to break the £1,300 mark, and that’s just an average!

So, three of the Big Six have now announced price rises. nPower was quick to quash rumours of its own price rise last week. However, it is almost inevitable that the remaining two (EdF and E.ON) will make their move in the next few weeks, with nPower soon after.

The cheapest tariffs continue to be withdrawn left, right and centre as experts urge consumers to get on a fixed tariff before even more prices can go up. If you are with SSE (which includes Scottish Hydro, Atlantic, Southern and Swalec) or British Gas, you have 30 days from their announcement to switch tariff and they can’t charge you a cancellation fee.

Comparison sites do Sweet Felicity Arkwright for the growing number of 'Energy Poor', whose energy costs exceed 10% of their income. They should provide some sort of social tariff comparison for - let's face it - the most needy in society.

British Gas 'Essentials' social tariff has informed even its 'Essentials' customers of an 18% increase in its gas prices next month. Where do they (or more importantly the Government and/or its useless OFGEM quango) think people on benefits or low incomes are going to continue to find the money for these huge increases?

Regulation and standardization of unit prices for both gas and electric is the only answer. I believe that this is the case in France and Germany (ironically), its just we the British 'mugs' who, as usual, are being ripped-off - and our Government are allowing it to happen, with the enormous tax rake-off they receive as a consequence of their inaction.

    We are indeed "Mugs"

The energy companies put up prices as most of the sheep that use them simply dont look for a better deal.

That coupled with the actual price of energy being at present those of 2008 figures.....????
