Find out why you could soon be hit with a staggering energy bill – and what you can do about it!

Top 10 energy tariffs

With the dreaded quarterly energy bill for this Winter dropping through our mailboxes this month, many of us could be hit with a staggering bill, hundreds of pounds higher than usual.

Nearly all of the energy suppliers, including ones outside the “Big Six”, such as Ovo and Utility Warehouse, have upped their prices this Winter, and with inflation and fuel prices still on the rise, there’s no guarantee that we won’t be hit with even higher bills.

Although our gas and electricity usage obviously falls once Winter passes, recent changes to pricing structures may mean that we won’t see our bills drop by as much as usual.

There are generally two tiers of pricing on gas and electricity: if you use under a set amount, you will be charged a higher, initial, rate. For anything over that, you’ll be charged the lower second tier rate.

This is a good thing during winter when you’re using a lot of energy, but it means you’re actually paying a higher rate and effectively being penalised for using less!

All of this emphasises the point that even though we may think we’re over the worst with our energy bills, we always need to do what we can to save money.

Online energy tariffs are generally much, much cheaper than other tariffs, and there are still some great deals available – grab them now before suppliers withdraw them and replace them with more expensive versions!

Hi MK22, green energy tariffs aren't always more expensive - it depends what tariff you're currently on. If you're already on a cheap online tariff then yes, they do generally cost a bit more. However, if you're on a standard tariff, they can be much cheaper - Ovo's green energy tariff is 7th cheapest.

Sadly, if you want to pay quarterly on receipt of bill, this will almost always be more expensive. Companies give a discount on direct debit because it costs them less.

Sorry, Marghaid, I was so terse it didn't make sense. I was merely pondering where the green energy tariffs and q'ly billing would fit in. I do apprecieate I am being charged for borrowing gas and electricity for 3 months which is partly countered by 2 months interest on the money and not having to panic every month over whether there is enough money in my bank account! The article heading is "Top 10 Energy Tariffs", not "The 10 cheapest Energy Tariffs".
