Best time to switch energy tariffs is now

Freezing weather set to leave our energy bills out in the cold this Christmas.

As Britain’s lowest temperatures on record continue for a second week, we are really starting to worry about the effect on our gas and electricity bills.

If the sub-zero weather continues, our calculations predict that it will push the average December gas bill up by 47%. This is going to have a significant impact, because if the cold weather lasts until Christmas we’re talking about an extra £51 on people's gas bills. That’s an increase which is going to make a big dent in household budgets, especially given the recent price rises by three of the biggest suppliers: Scottish Power, SSE and British Gas (from 10th December).

These figures are based on average UK temperatures, so bear in mind that temperatures often drop even lower in rural locations.

Those on state pensions may be feeling the cold of both the weather and the price rises more than others, so you need to make sure you’re receiving the winter fuel allowance that you’re entitled to.

If you want to avoid an expensive energy bill without skimping on heating, the quickest way is to ensure you are on the cheapest deal by comparing all the tariffs available. Here is an update on top tariffs:-

Caveat emptor. An outdated concept nowadays, I realise, but don't ever proceed on a comparison website result until you have established the unit costs of the company said to be better by the comparison site and compared your actual consumption and cost for the last 12 months with the equivalent results for the prospective supplier (dual fuel, of course). Every time I run that check, my current supplier (EDF) either wins (and continues to) or the difference (<= £100) is not worth the hassle of changing. Emails to the comparison websites pointing out these results remain unanswered.

The problem with your comparison engine is that it doesn't handle a dual-fuel tariff very well.

By that I mean slthough it's easy to enter the supplier for each fuel, it's not possible to enter the one direct debit payment I make for both fuels. In addition, when I entered the correct dual-fuel tariff, it said I was wrong.

So, I'm going elsewhere for price comparison.
