My favourite blogs
Find out about five top quality blogs. Some could help you boost your finances. Others could provide thought food for your brain to chew on.
Following on from Why I like blogs, I'm now going to highlight five of my favourite blogs. Four of them are financial, one isn't. Hopefully, you'll like at least one or two. I'm not ranking them in any particular order.
Ray Boulger
If you're looking for incisive, informed commentary on the mortgage market, there are two places to go on the web: lovemoney.com and Ray Boulger's Blog. Ray is a true mortgage guru who knows the industry inside out. On Monday he warned that fixed rate mortages were set to rise imminently and he has already been proved right. That's typical of him.
FruGal
The FruGal blog is written by an anonymous personal finance journalist. It's similar in some way to what we do on lovemoney.com but it's written from a very personal, female perspective. I'd love to know FruGal's real name - then we could try and lure her to work here.
Anyway, take a look at The stay at home wife debate, one of her best posts. How to double your pension contributions at no extra cost is another good one.
Andrew Sullivan - the Daily Dish
Andrew Sullivan is a brilliant writer. He's a UK expat who has lived in the US for more than 20 years. I became a fan last year thanks to his outstanding coverage of the Presidential election.
These days, he's mainly focusing on Bush/Cheney's support of torture, gay equality, and the decline of the Republican party. Here's a link to a great recent post on torture.
Sullivan is also great at finding quirky stuff on the web and highlighting it. Look at this creepy ad with babies wrapped in cellophane.
You can also read a weekly column by Sullivan in the 'Sunday Times.' It's well worth reading if you're a US politics junkie like me.
Guardian Money
The Guardian Money blog is a bit different. It's written by a team, so you don't get such a strong personal 'connection', but the quality of some of the posts means this blog is one of my favourites. I particularly enjoyed this one about defacing business cards after you've been made redundant.
The Money Debate
If you don't know much about the financial services industry, The Money Debate blog may not be right for you. In fact, I suspect most of its readers are financial professionals.
Nevertheless there's some interesting stuff on there - particularly on the future for IFAs and other regulatory issues.
So that's the lowdown on five of my favourite blogs. I hope to do a follow-up post on more blogs next week.
