Bring back Tony Gubba!
Gary Lineker is ridiculously overpaid. Let's replace him with Tony Gubba. I reckon he'd do the job for much less money.
I went to bed in a bad mood last night. I had just read that the BBC pays Gary Lineker £1.5m a year to present 'Match of the Day.' What a ridiculous waste of our money!
I couldn't care less what ITV pays its stars. That's a matter for the company's shareholders. But when it comes to the BBC, we pay the licence fee and our money shouldn't be wasted on inflated wages.
Lineker isn't the only overpaid presenter at the Beeb. Most of us know about Jonathan Ross - he's on £5.6m a year - but did you realise that Fiona Bruce is paid £500,000 a year? All she has to do is a read an autocue and ask some mildly intelligent questions. I've read an autocue for some of our lovemoney.com videos; trust me, it ain't hard.
In some ways, I think the salaries for the lower lights are even worse. BBC News Channel presenter, Carrie Gracie, is hardly a household name yet last month she admitted on TV that she is on £92k a year. I'm in no doubt there are plenty of intelligent, calm, knowledgeable women who would happily do the job for £50k or less. Why should we paying such a big salary to a nobody?
Going back to Gary
But Gary Lineker is the one that annoys me the most. Yes, I know, Gary is said to be a nice guy. And he never had a yellow card during his playing career. And he does a decent job on 'Match of the Day.' But, let's face it, people don't watch the programme to see Lineker. They want to watch highlights from football matches. And there are other presenters out there who could probably do a perfectly decent job on a much lower salary.
Tony Gubba springs to mind. When I was a child in the 70s, he was the coming man of BBC Sport. For whatever reason, he fell down the pecking order in the 80s but has remained a loyal servant of the BBC regardless.
I bet he'd take the job for way less than £1.5m.
