Fight back against £1 petrol

The price of petrol will hit £1 a litre today. Find out ways to fight back.

The price of petrol is expected to hit £1 a litre today, according to PetrolPrices.com. That's a 16% rise since the beginning of the year.

Petrol has been pushed up by the rising oil price and a 2p increase in fuel duty since April 1st.

It's not a great day for motorists. The only crumb of comfort is that petrol is still below its all-time high - 119.9p per litre last year.

Anyway, I thought I'd give a few motoring money-saving tips to help you fight back against £1 petrol:

  • Visit petrolprices.com - you can find the cheapest petrol prices in your area
  • Make sure your tyres are pumped to the correct level. Driving with soft tyres can add 2% to your fuel bill, according to the RAC
  • Drive at the optimal speed. Driving at 55 to 65mph is normally the most fuel efficient speed. Also try to avoid sharp braking and accelerating as much as possible.
  • If you've got a roof rack on your car that you don't need, take it off! It increases fuel consumption. Even a St George flag will do some damage, so my advice to English readers is to forget about patriotism and save some money!

In an earlier version of this post, I wrote about a Shell credit card. That card appears to have been withdrawn, so I have amended this post to reflect that.

Are you wondering where house prices will go next? Check out my latest blog post. I reckon they're still going down.

    Hi consumer terrorist,

'Ed - I thouht this post was about fighting back against Petrol prices and not global warming????????????????'

Yup, my original post was about petrol prices, but conversations can take different turns.

Re your suggestion of boycotts: I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint you. I'm not keen. I doubt they will achieve anything.

And anyway, a very large chunk of the price of petrol goes to government taxes. The way to reduce the price at the pump is to persuade MPs to cut petrol taxes. But that's unlikely given the state of the government's finances.

Indeed Ed conversations take different turnsbut is it not the duty of the moderator to keep the post on track?

As for MP's reducing taxes on Petrol Customs & Excise wpould never let that happen. So, that leaves us with only one option and that is to boycott the suppliers and make them reduce costs inline with Barrel proces and to make the suppliers apply more pressure to the government to reduce taxes.

Regarding global warming we should stop recyling the majority of rubbish as the cost to recycle far outweighs the benefit.

It Is far more sensible to apply pressure on the supermarket giants and go back to selling goods with less packaging. It is the creation of this packaging that is harmful to the environment and recycling just adds to the problem.

You can't pull me back on track as you have not done it with anyone else....

If you want to reduce your relience on costly fuel then get a Ground source heat pump for Home heating, use voltaic roof tiles to produce electricity, maybe have a domstic wind turbine fitted.

Now all these things will not pay for themselves for many years but just imagine, when gas runs out (which it will do very soon) and the Russians become sole supplier of gas how much will it cost to heat your home. In turn there will be a massive increase in demand for electricity which will not be able to meet demands. But if you have alternatives you suddenly become self sufficient.

Doesn't solve the problem of petrol prices but may help with saving money so you can afford petrol.

Sleep easy out there don't forget this government is looking after people or should i say number one. Anyway you can always rely on the police to do th eright thing and nick a motorist to meet their targets, lets be honest criminals are to hard to find!!
