£100 for free? No thanks.......

Alliance & Leicester's offer of £100 to open a current account is due to end next Thursday.

If you open an Alliance & Leicester Premier Current Account before next Thursday, you'll get £100 as a sign-up bonus. Not only that, you'll also get free European travel insurance worth up to £60.

The offer sounds great when you first hear about it, but I won't be opening an account myself. I've just too heard too many complaints about customer service at A & L. I can't face transferring my current account if the process is going to be problematic. Of course, £100 is attractive, but I don't think this is 'money for nothing.' I fear it's 'money for lots of hassle.'

What's more, I suspect that the £100 deal may come back in a month or two. A&L offered an £100 deal earlier this year which ended on April 2nd. Then in May, the deal came back and it's now due to end on May 28th. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the offer came back in July or August. So I don't think there's any great need to rush. If I change my mind and decide I really do need the £100, I'll probably get another chance later.

So that's why I'm steering clear.  But if the £100 offer is just too tempting, you could find out more in this love it or loathe it video.

I've had the opposite experience entirely! When I switched to A&L, I had to ensure I had enough money in both my previous account and my new one so that any direct debits and standing orders that may still be in the switching process wouldn't bounce. This proved to be trickier than I'd expected, but A&L were understanding about the fact I'd gone overdrawn because I'd only just opened the account, so they didn't fine me with any bank charges.

When I had a similar problem with Natwest, however, they were totally uninterested to listen to my complaint. It took two letters and about ten phone calls before I finally persuaded them to refund their charges.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I have no complaints. From my perspective, their customer service seems far superior to Natwest.

I have been with A & L since it was Girobank and now run it online as there is no branch close to me. I have had no problems and when I had to phone them recently with a query (not their fault) the girl I spoke to pointed out that the interest rate on another account had dropped significantly ( I wasn't aware of how low this had gone) so moved me to another higher interest account immediately over the phone. I was very grateful for this and can only praise their service on this occasion.
