Marks & Spencer is launching a new £10-a-month 'Premium Club' tomorrow. It's great if your two biggest passions are travelling and drinking coffee in M&S. But for most of us, it's a 'no.'

In return for £10 a month, you'll get;

  • Free hot drinks at M&S cafes up to a value of £120 a year
  • Various 'special treats'
  • Worldwide multi-trip travel insurance
  • Triple loyalty points on the M&S credit card for shopping at the store.

You must have an M&S credit card to join up.

Now some of those benefits sound good when you first hear them. But are they really that useful? Is the club worth £120 a year?

Well, the insurance offer could be good if you travel a lot.

And, heck, if you really like having a nice coffee break when you're out shopping, I guess you may like this deal too. But if it were me, I'd just end up buying expensive scones and cakes to go with my coffee.

The loyalty points aren't that special either. If you're just a normal M&S Card holder, you get £4 back in loyalty vouchers if you spend £400 in a quarter. If you join the Premium Club, you'll get £12 back in vouchers.

Let's imagine that you're a big Marks and Sparks spender, and you shell out £400 at M&S every quarter. The Premium Club will give you an extra £8 each quarter in vouchers - amounting to £32 a year. Yet club membership costs £120........

By all means sign up for the M&S card. It's a good credit card with a great 0% deal on new purchases. Just steer clear of the Premium Club.

    I presume the coffee must be absolutely spectacular? (Then again, my favourite caffetiere coffee is from M&S and it is unbeatable...)

    I'm happy with bog-standard Nescafe myself. I'm a man of simple tastes.
