M&S to open 28 bank branches by end of 2012

M&S is to open 28 bank branches in its stores by the end of the year.

The firm’s Premium Current Account goes live today – you can find out all you need to know in M&S unveils Premium Current Account. And to mark the occasion, the banking newcomer has outlined its bank branch plans for the rest of the year.

16 branch locations have already been confirmed, with 13 open at the moment. They are:

  • Marble Arch
  • Bromley
  • Glasgow Argyle Street
  • Handforth, Cheshire
  • Pudsey, Leeds
  • Aberdeen
  • The Gyle, Edinburgh
  • Manchester
  • Culverhouse Cross, Cardiff
  • Meadowhall, Sheffield
  • Birmingham
  • Gemini, Warrington
  • Metro, Hateshead
  • Hedge End, Southampton
  • Bluewater, Kent
  • Cribbs Causeway, Bristol

The 12 new branches will be in:

  • London Colney
  • Braehead, Renfrewshire
  • Oxford
  • Merry Hill, Dudley
  • Milton Keynes
  • Cheshire Oaks, Cheshire
  • Camberley, Surrey
  • Norwich
  • White City, London
  • Exeter
  • Shoreham, West Sussex
  • Lisburn, Belfast

One of the big selling points of the branches is that they are open the same hours as the main store, including at weekends. In addition, customers are given a pager so that they can continue shopping while they wait for an appointment.

I just tried to access bank.marksandspencer.com and am getting "HTTP/1.1 Server Too Busy" - doesn't bode well. :-S

M&S are only "fronting" the operation - in fact if you do go for this you will in fact be banking with HSBC - and you will be charged a monthly fee.

Why not just go straight to HSBC and get it free as I doubt any M&S benefits will be worth £7 a month.
