Last minute frugal gifts!

Published 22 December 2009

Mostly, Christmas makes me happy. The lights, the tree, the songs, the food... and, of course, the presents.

The trouble is, to get some, you have to give some. And that means spending money. According to vouchercodes.co.uk, the average Brit spends £367 on presents at Christmas.

That's right! Three hundred and sixty seven pounds!

Now, I don't know about you, but to me that seems excessive. I've just about finished my Christmas shopping and I reckon I spent about £160 in total, on 11 relatives. I'm sure many lovemoney.com readers have done even better than that. If you have, join the discussion over on Q&A and let me know!

If, however, you're still looking for that perfect - but frugal - Christmas gift, you've come to the right place. Over the past few weeks, lovemoney.com has published a wealth (literally) of articles on how to find a bargain - or even free - Christmas gift. Here are some of the highlights!

Make your own

If, like me, you've always fancied making your own gifts, but figured the time and cost wouldn't be worth it, then read Five fantastic gifts you can make for under £5. It explains how you can make ribbon brooches, bath bombs, sock monkeys and even home-made kites - each for under £5!

Bake your own

In Bake delicious Xmas gifts for £2, we explain how to make five different types of yummy Christmas treats, each for less than £2. And when I say yummy, I mean it: the list includes gingerbread men, marshmallow fudge, star-shaped biscuits and home-made crunchie bars. Read more

Free gift tags and wrapping paper

Here's a round-up of 10 things you can get for free this Christmas. My favourite has got to be the free animated Elf snowball fight but I also like the free gift tags and wrapping paper. And those Victorian Santa cards are awesome.

Online shopping

As we explain in Last minute online bargains for Christmas, it's still not too late to shop online at major retailers like Amazon, if you get your socks on and order by 2pm today (or 8.30am if you're delivering to London or Birmingham). You'll have to pay for Express delivery, which costs a whopping £8.80, but if you use pricecutreview.com/uk, a website of all the top discounted items on Amazon, then you may still find you pay less than in the shops. Alternatively, use http://deallocker.com/tool/secret-amazon-discount/ to uncover discounts of up to 99% on Amazon in any category. You can even do a search by brand or keyword if you want to.

Cheap but unique

In 30 affordable gifts that you won't find on the high street, Serena Cowdy rounded up 30 cheap but unique gifts that are for sale on crafty site Folksy.com. I must say I have used Folksy myself - I made my first purchase from Serena's own stationary shop, The Copper Swallow - and I'm a big fan.

If you offer to pay extra for postage, you may be able to persuade a seller to send your chosen gift by courier so it arrives in time for Christmas, but bear in mind this will no doubt cost you more - and it's up to the individual seller to decide.

Still, if you're truly stuck, here is a chance to get something unique and hand-made, and there are some really fantastic bargains to be had!

Frugal Friday

Today, we've done a Frugal Friday Christmas special, rounding up - as always - the best bargains and deals to be had on the high street. Check it out.

The best present to give this Christmas

Finally, I'd like to give you all something, which you can in turn give to your family and friends: a richer future.

Sorry if that sounds corny, but as the editor of this site, it's really important to me!

Ed Bowsher's put together 12 steps you can take to make sure you're better off financially next year, and if I could, I'd print them off for each of you and put them under your Christmas trees!

But as I can't do that, if you know someone who could seriously benefit from a spot of simple, sensible financial advice, why not print off Ed's article and stick it in their stockings? It might just be the best present you give this Christmas!

I hope that's helpful. Good luck finding that perfect gift - and Merry Christmas!
